Default Key Information

Had to get a new key made and thought I would pass on my experience.

I was down to 1 key, the other one is somewhere in Aspen. So while cruising eBay I saw 2 after market keys for 96-04 Disco. I did some Googling and found that the local hardware store could cut them. I picked them up and went first to Lowes and then to Home Depot. No good. Then I went to my local Ace Hardware and they were able to cut them. Actually, they had the blanks there too. So, for those that need an extra key Ace Hardware has them for $2.99 a piece. They are Ilco RV4 blanks.

I think my ignition is so worn that the new keys won't work. They work great on the doors, but I really have to jiggle it to get it to work in the ignition. I just wanted a backup anyway so it's good.

So there you go. A spare rover key for $2.99.

I tried a few different places including ace and that RV4 blank never would work. I had to order one on ebay and get ace to cut it.

shadill, mine works great on the door too but you have to kind of slightly move it in and out while turning to get it to start the ignition.

I wonder if it is because when they cut the key, they line it up from the front. Since my key is worn out, the end of it is rounded. I wonder if it would better to line the key up from the back instead? Might be worth a try at $2.99.

You can always take a file to your key and clean it up to make it work better.
Wont take much, use a emery board type nail file.

Don't the D2s have that plastic head on the key that contains the alarm/computer chip?

When you put the key in the ignition, don't put it all the way in. It should turn. That has happened to me a couple times for other cars. If you stick the key all the way in like the original, it feels like the ignition is locked. Just pull it out a teeny bit and as your pulling out turn the ignition to find its sweet spot, it should start up..

I think some of the later D2's started using transponder chips but from what I can tell it has to have the fob style housing.
