Default Keys

I have a 96 D1 that I bought used about 1.5 months ago. It only came with one key, which is a desaster waiting to happen. Does anyone know if its possible to go to Walmart or to a locksmith and have a key made? Is there a chip inside? Is this a dealer only thing?

Thanks
Andy

Are you talking about make a regular blank key or a key for a remote?
As old as you one key is, it is pretty warn out and not good to make a copy from. Go to a local dealer and ask them to pull up a key code number so you can then go to a lock smith and make an exact copy.

any locksmith should be able to make you a spare. going to the dealer is pretty cheap too.

I had the same thing happen. Took it to Home Depot AFTER I had to purchase a blank key for a D1 off the internet and they were able to copy it. Assuming you have power locks, you'll want to also purchase a remote and have Land Rover set it for you.

I would NOT trust Home Depot (or any otherplace that uses a key machine with cassettes)-just ask-to make a key. Thecassettes that they use are specific to the key blanks that they provide. This does not apply to the newer machines without cassettes. If you did get a key copied from the machine with cassettes, you are really lucky, and it shouldn't have happened. I used to make keys at the HD, so you can take my advise or leave it, but the last time I checked blank key fobs are not that cheap for Land Rovers. Use a locksmith.

You haven't been paying attention to some replys. I suggested and highly recommend you have a key cut from a key code number that Rover will give you. You need to do this cause that tired old key you have will not be accurate and will cause the key tumblers to wear out real fast.
Do it right and save your self some grief.
