Land Rover Discovery 2 head gasket removal
Dear sirs,I have a Disco 2 with a 4.0 Gems with a Bosch upper fuel injection ,I watched the 2 videos by Atlantic British great videos.I am going to attempt It this will be my first time.How long does it it really take?And I have another question,I have had several opinions that the heads could be possibly be warped .I over heated because of a faulty water pump.Ther was steam coming out from under the hood so I stopped it immediately .The next day it started up fine no weird noises it idled for about 10 minutes and then I turned it off Does anyone know have any opinions on this situation ?I found reconditioned heads on eBay for 500.00 don’t want to go that route but it would be better to buy reconditioned heads as opposed to taking my old heads to the machine shop is going to cost the same but I don’t think that the heads are warped because I shut it right down I need some opinions please what do y’all think?Thank you very much.
I'm lazy and slow and just use hand tools, so I take my time and do the driver side on one day and then I do the passenger side on the next day. You can take them off in one casual day if you want. You don't have to be as slow as me. Heck, I could go slow and start early enough to do both sides in 1 day if I was motivated.
Once off, take them to your favorite machinist and have them "turned" or shaved until they are flat again. This will also be a good site/shop to have them test to insure that your heads aren't cracked internally, and all machine shops can dip your heads in a chemical tank to clean them inside and out. Highly recommended.
Typical cost is less than $150 total (for both heads). Then have them replace the valve stem seals and lap your valves (costs more). Now you've got "reconditioned" heads.
Your exhaust ports on those heads will have visible marks from your exhaust gaskets. You could also pay that machine shop to "port" those exhaust ports by machining each hole to match your gasket marks. Do this *if* you plan on doing the same thing to your exhaust manifold. You'll gain "free" power and gas mileage by doing both. Giving both your exhaust manifolds and both of your heads to your machine shop will yield your best results.

second, how do you know your head gaskets are leaking?
third, if you do replace the head gaskets, definitely have the heads skimmed to guarantee they are flat. do this whether you reuse your old ones or purchase used ones.

Dear sirs ,Thanks for the advice.I have a upper head gasket set with the oem head bolts.I really don’t know if the heads are warped.I will tell you exactly what happened.I drove about a mile maybe mile in a half when the steam came from underneath the hood and it just died in my parking lot.I had a pretty good mechanic come over and take a look at it.He checked the dip stick and the oil was sort of milking looking so I drained the oil and about a Cup of water came out first then the oil I saved the oil to look at it and it looks like black oil,So I don’t know where the water came from?I Did something stupid when it died in the drive way I poured water on the motor to cool it down,Is it possible that the water seeped Into the upper head value cover gasket they need replacing it has 130,000 miles in it.Its very puzzling,Because the next day I changed the water pump and thermostat And it started right up but I let it idle no strange Noises.I replaced the plugs also so I have to put the new oil and antifreeze and start it up and see if the water comes back I guess that’s the only way to know for sure but I don’t want to drive it because I don’t want to do anymore damage I really believe that it’s ok but wanted to get a second opinion what would you guys do if you were in my shoes?Thanks again
I have done 5 hg jobs, never had to do this on a Disco.
He means he is an expert and probably checked his heads for flatness himself before proceeding blindly. You being an amature (due respect) should probably have a machine shop check your heads for flatness before proceeding.
