Default Leak around rear wheel.

OK, I got the coolant leak fixed and the “bad” oil leak narrowed down on my 04. I drove it to work today, ran great, and when I came home to pull it back in the garage, I noticed a puddle where my rear passenger wheel normally resides in the garage. Clear fluid that I think is gear oil? The hubs were replaced on this thing very shortly before I bought it a month ago. But I think one has failed...which Ive heard can happen often with replacements.

So what do you guys think of my newest leak on the 04?

Are you sure it's axle fluid? Check your brake reservior also, might be a caliper leaking. The way the oil pattern is so fine, makes me think brake fluid. Usually rearend dope, especially in cold climates, just collects in the rim and then drains down when parked...not so much of a fanning of fluid.

If it is rearend dope, make sure and clean plastic breather tube on top of axle housing. Just push outer collar down and pull tube out, then blow it out with compressed air.

It's leaking gear oil from your internal differential seal.
This pics looks just like mine did but my diff gear oil leak (the oil was Royal Purple purple colored and really sticky/thick) was at my right front wheel area.
It's an easy but timely maintenance fix since you have remove the diff axel to replace the seal.

Looks to me like that "O" behind the wheel hub failed.

It's like a $3 part. Have to get the wheel hub off though. Takes a few hours. Jack up that side so minimal axle fluid leaks out. Or change the fluid if you haven't in awhile.

No doubt, the O ring (FTC4919) went titz up.

I personally use a light coat of Right Stuff RTV on them when I install them.

I installed a new rear hub over the summer and it started leaking immediately. My tire looked just like yours. I thought I cut or pinched the o-ring during installation, but it was actually leaking through the bearing seals. They sent a replacement and it has been fine.

It’s pretty thick and doesn’t smell like brake fluid. Pretty sure its axle fluid.
