Default Leaking Transfer Case?

So when pulling the front drive shaft out to have it rebuilt, i noticed the transfer case seemed a bit too moist with fluid on the panel with the bolts on it and enough where it had dripped on to that support bar below it. It has not been puddling on the driveway so it is not pouring out fluid but I'm starting to wonder how bad a problem I might have on my hands. I am going to drain and replace the fluid in there clean everything and see what happens. Will give an update when drive shaft is back in and i run the truck with new fluid in the transfer case. I want to see if it starts leaking again. I will take pictures and post them.

Go order a bottle of White Shepard oil seal stuff and add it to the clean fluid you will be installing in the t/case, this will stop your leaks quickly.

Dont add any stop leak yet, first change your fluid and put in 85w-140 and the leak should stop.
If then and only then does it still leak then add some stop leak.

Guys cmon!!!...................why add stop leak, thats the "cowboy" way to do it.......

Simply drain the oil remove the plate, clean it up and refit with some new gasket sealer.....not hard at all.

Post a picture of where it's coming from. Power wash everything to locate it better.


This is off a DI, but it's the same thing...

I have had good results with white shepherd. It does not contain any particulates and flows like water with a consistency like brake fluid.

That is a inspection cover, drain it, clean it, RTV it, refill it, done.

Im with panser and spike on this one. I had a leak from the inspection plate so I went out and bought some gear oil and the grey rtv sealant. I haven't lost a drip since and it is a very easy job.

transfer case drained, plate cleaned new heavier oil put in. will keep an eye on it. rebuilt drive shaft put on, drives freakin great!

if the leak is from the inspection plate, it is a fairly easy fix. If is is coming from the seal above the inspection plate it is a pita to get to. Some have suggested smearing rtv around the seal. I had a leak from the seal and chose to use the White Shepherd product. It has worked great for over a year with no problems whatsoever. If is a bit of an effort getting it in to the fill hole without a pump. It did stop the leak within a couple of hours of driving. Oh how I wish that they had a product that you could add to the gas tank to keep the gas from leaking from the engine as fast as it does..............

Phil 99 Disco I 98k miles, running great, a pesky cel for a vaccum leak code 1179, but doesn't seem to impact performance.

looking at a 2001 with 74k miles light on options but had an engine replacement at dealer at 38k recent tune up, brakes and fluids. Other than that, somewhat barebones.
