Default Lift for a D1

This disco has been in my family since it was new in 95 however i have now taken it upon myself to fix it and make it more of an off road/ ski transport.
I was thinking a 2" lift but i am up for anything, i need it to be a good highway car and also a good off road car so nothing to insane. Please advise

Old Man Emu and Rover Tym Engineering both make good lifts for the D1. Couldn't tell if you one is better than the other since I have not used either but I have read a lot of good about both.

Well you are not going to get a better off road truck from the factory than a 1990's Discovery, so you already have a great off road car.
If you want a lift that is fine, but I think that first you need to see what the truck can do with a good set of tires in stock form.

How many miles are on the truck? How long has it been sitting? What is wrong with it right now?

The truck has about 136,000 on it and has been sitting for about 5 years. Took it to the dealer this past week and all that it needed was a new wiper motor, and an oil change, everything else looked good.
I have had the truck off road numerous time and well aware of its potential. The main reason Im looking for a life is not the added 4 wheeling potential but the actual clearance. I live in the mountains and need a vehicle with extra clearance. For instance my 2500 chevy has a 6" lift and it got high centered im out driveway last year after a snow storm. I know it has a shorter wheel base but the clearance would be nice.

Thanks

Well like I said just wanting a lift is fine.
Your 2500 has a much longer wheelbase, the Disco is only 100".
It is alot easier to high center with a longer wheelbase like that on your pickup.

When I got stuck in a blizzard a few weeks ago, I made it through some pretty large snow drifts with my stock rover. The place you need the extra clearance in deep snow is under the axles and the only way to do that is larger tires. All a lift kit does is move the axles further from the frame and body to allow more room for larger tires and/or suspension travel. Without going too extreme the largest tire you'll fit under a rover with a 2" lift is about a 32 or 33" tire. That is only going to give you about another inch to inch and a half of clearance under the axles. I have never had a problem with getting high centered under the body or frame in snow when my axles haven't also been buried. But I may have never encountered the same situations you do in the mountains of Colorado although I have been in some extreme winter conditions in Alaska.

I have a 99 D1 sd and I have a rovertym 2 inch lift. Very happy with the results\performance so far. But like someone else mentioned, you only get
room for bigger tires and wheel travel w\ a suspension lift. Bigger tires are the
only way to get (differential) ground clearence, if I understand correctly.
But anyways, Rovertym has been good to me.

I know it wont add to much but also the added surface area is better for deep snow as well. But i am also looking for
this to be an all around 4x4 so a lift couldn't hurt. Just trying to get a handle if people think that its worth it. Plus i heard
Old Man Emu actually makes the truck handle better then stock.

P.S
Im sure you have seen worse snow in AK. Just smarter than me to avoid ridiculous drifts

If the question is is it worth a lift, the answer is yes, hands down. It looks cool and will allow for the larger tires to get the clearance you're looking for. But you need some good tires on it also and that should have you set to go. Spreading the weight out with wider tires do help in the snow but has just the opposite effect on ice. Wide tires on ice and you'll slide all over the place.

All I can say is that my truck gets down snowmobile trails in Northern MI just fine with stock sized tires (235/70/16) and no lift.

If you need more flotation for deep snow you are better airing down when needed other than a fatter tire.
Fatter tires will mess with your handling, turning radius and like AK said, forget ice or slush, you will float right off a cliff.
