A liitle advise
I am looking at a 2001 Discovery. The price on this vehicle is $12,000 and it is in pretty good shape with 60k miles. I am getting it for my wife so i need it to be reliable. Can i do mantenance on these at home, or are they a specialty type vehicle where i have to go to a dealer? I don't want a vehicle that will eat me up on mantenance. Also i want longevity. I drive a Toyota with 220k miles and have come to expect that from vehicles, can this one deliver? Are there any common problems with this year that i should look into? Any help is greatly appreciated.

The Land Rover is heavily dependent on the owner doing two things. One-- is to maintain it "to the letter" with major's at 30K mile intervals. Try and cheat, and you are gonna get burned. and two--- you have to "look and listen" on a relatively frequent basis for any new leaks or noises that give you an indication that something is amiss. These vehicles are not like the Japanese, Swedish, or some German offerings that compete with the Land Rover in the light sport utility/luxury vehicle market. While Land Rovers out perform them all in a true off-road environment, the upkeep cost is much higher. Don't buy one without complete service records. Don't buy one with a salvage title. And don't buy one that came from any region with a recent history of floods.
Truthfully-- I wouldn't put Land Rover in the same category for longevity with Toyota. To get to 220K miles, the Land Rover would have had almost the entire drivetrain replaced at least once, 5.5 brake jobs (rotors and pads-- and calipers). 3.5 water pumps, etc..
