RE: Locking the diff?
i (correction WE)was messing with that today and while moving forward at under 5mph i had to shift in neutral then push the low high lever all the way forward and then the gear shifter back to drive.as far as locking it the land rover manual said to move the low/high shifter to the left once its engaged to lock it. but it also said it was optional. my rover didn't have that option at least i don't think so .it also said if you press the mode button and shift either first, second, third or drive it manually locks it in that gear. Spike-Kathy speaking now on your rover does on the shifter **** itself, the one that shows low/high gear 4 wheel drive- is there a diagram on the **** telling you to move it to the left to lock? I am just wondering beings you say that yours locks if you pull it towards the driver side. Ours has a diagram down in front of the low/high shifter telling you how to do it, but it has nothing showing to move the lever to the left to lock it.

RE: Locking the diff?
Stupid-Not all DII's have the CDL (center locking differential)
Some years have it but it is NOT hooked up, some years do not have it at all.
So depending on your year depends on wether or not you even have the option.
All DI's have it as well as the 2004, 1999.5-2000 have it, some 2001's have the option, no 2002-2003's have it.
It is very confusing.
