I have an LR shop lined up to check it out for me.....oil pressure and coolant system pressure check and drive shafts ....this is what I specifically mentioned I wanted checked. He said he would check those and several other known issues along with basic inspection, $200 to do this....so I hope she passes the major test. Thx for the help.

Very smart, and just counter minus the estimates to fix any issues.

Hopefully, you get it!

You’ll find the forum invaluable.

One thing to have them inspect is the Neutral Safety or XYZ switch on the transmission. My ‘03’s just needed rebuilding. They can easily check to see if the front rivets have popped off. It can be rebuilt, and that has solved my non start issue. Make sure the Transfer case is sealed as well.

Made an offer of $4500 and to my surprise the owner excepted with no counter so Im happy. Checked out good mechanically....typical valve cover leak and one rear door actuator dead. I pick her up tomorrow. Plan on cleaning under the hood and polishing the headlights first things. Im really excited to start tinkering!

Congrats! Doing the valve covers is a good project. You’ll have to take the top Upper Manifold off which will give you a look at the injectors. Also, you could do coilpack, wires, plugs same time depending on service history.

For valve cover gaskets I highly recommend Fel-Pro or Mahle molded gaskets. More expensive? Yes. Easier to install without dropping ringlets in heads? 200%

Hey guys, just curious why does everybody say pick up a 2004 just because of the CDL? How hard is it to just add the CDL?...or just add lockers? I’ve seen some videos of guys that I’ve done it and it doesn’t seem to awfully hard. In my shopping I’m finding plenty of 2003 model’s. The 2004’s that I am finding are a lot more expensive and are still going to require work. So why not just get an 03? And one must have a CDL, just add it later. I’m not trying to be an *** LOL, these are all options and thoughts that have running through my head during my search and I’d like to get some honest opinions on there viability.

the 2003 may have a TC with the CDL, but not the ability to engage from the cabin FYI. There are kits to add it, but they are $250 if memory serves, and just swapping one with CDL is probably a better option.

I haven't missed it, but mine is a Road Trip/Daily Driver, so I don't miss the locking CDL. I imagine that the Traction Control system will likely get me thru anything I throw at it, if it doesn't I will consider the upgrade then.

A full CDL kit is going to be a lot more than $250. You can pay more than that just for the handle.
I'm planning to swap the CDL part of the transfer case from my old truck to my '03, but that's a few months away yet. The offroad performance difference between non-CDL and CDL was substantial when I enabled it on my '99.

I understand that the CDL is a boon off road, even with TC. I have front and rear lockers on my Power Wagon so I get locking diff’s advantages and that it’s really an instance for more extreme circumstances. I’m just perplexed at the instant default to recommend an 04. Even if it might cost $1k to add CDL or lockers, to an 03 why not just say 03s are fine but with that caveat? Maybe that’s being done and I’ve not seen it?

People HATE '03's. There was an issue with the blocks they used that did not line up the oil pump correctly if memory serves. Those engines were more than likely replaced under warranty. I love mine, and my own neglect/ignorance is what caused me to trash the first motor. Just make sure you install a good thermostat and replace it at regular intervals.

I think the MY 99-01's had the CDL case but no mech to engage them (left over from D1 production) and then brought back in 04'. I could be wrong but I don't thin any of the 03's came with a CDL case

When in doubt, check for the nipple!
