Default Looking to buy 95 discovery

I am looking at a 95 Discovery with 130000 miles. It has two problems. First, it has trouble getting into second gear. Someone said that is the clutch damper, and an easy fix. Is it? The second problem is the last time the owner used the criuse control, he had to have some electrical stuff fixed. Am I in for pain and bankrupcy if I buy this otherwise nice SUV?

I would be weary because of the high mileage. If the transmission is an easy fix, have the owner fix it before you buy it. With high miles like that, it is hard to know what condition the engine is in. You are also looking at potential cooling system repairs and exhaust repairs real soon, both of which are expensive (I own a 96 Disco with 180,000). I bought it used with 40,000. I know exactly what's going on with my truck, but it is beacuse of the history that I have with it. Another big repair that you may be in for would be the transfer case box. It controls the 4 wheel drive functions. If that goes, that is a big fix.

if aren't familiar with rovers i would probly stay away from it.i've seen alot of people think they got a good deal then have to spend another 3k just to keep it running enough to sell.ask some of the mechanic shops in your area that specialize in rovers if the do pre-purchase inspections, most do for $60-100.

He bought it from a small dealer in England that specializes in Rovers and will ship here on container ship. John has some interestring write-ups on his import experience.

I looked at the english dealers site, he had some great vehicles at really sweet prices. Even used Disco's as well as the Defenders and Ex-MOD. They are super heavy duty. You would be suprised. Buy it there , save the shipping over Big bucks.
i was looking thru the website you mentioned but i am not finding much
do you happen to have the link of the dealer website? and the thread about the experience he had importing it?
thank you

How much are they asking for it? That makes a huge difference. I've seen some 95's where the people are asking stupid high prices.

I agree with Tom, if the purchase price is reasonable, you may have a good find if you can do most of the maintenance yourself!!!

It could be a good project.

If you have to have a dealer or specialty place do it, look out, run away from it!

Just don't spend a lot upfront>

One of my buddies has 2 95 DI's. He was thrilled to get the first one, then he got a prts car, now he wants to dump them both.

At the price, I may take them off his hands, but I've got to take a close look. I think I can get them both real cheap, but that maybe a deep moneypit as well.

I bought my 95 for $700, it had 168,000 miles and is a automatic. I have found transmissions cheap on CL. As long as you are doing the labor on your own vehicle then they are totally worth it. If you are paying someone? MONEY PIT! Labor can eat you alive. I have worked on my own vehicles for 23 years and am a tech at Audi so nothing is too much for me. My point is, the only way these are worth it is if you can do work on it yourself. All the reviews I have read with people who hate them are ones who always took them to the dealer for repair. In here you have a excellent support group. The advice I have gotten is bar none the best.

Good luck with your decision.

Default Difference between 95 and 97?

GUYS,

I TOTALLY AGREE. I am doing a lot of stuff done myself to my 97. I am just wondering how similar the 95's are. I know the 95 has the 3.9 with the distibutor and a carb I guess instead of the FI 4.0.

Other than that, aren't the drivetrains and other things common?

I can get a running 95 for $500 so I am thinking why not?
