Looking at DII purchase, anything I should look out for?
Hey guys, I've had my share of series 1 but never had a series 2.
If anyone has any buying tips or things I should inspect, I appreciate the input.
He's firm at 4k, the lady really likes it. I'm on the fence if we should get this one or look for a series 1 truck.
Also, can anyone direct me to the differences between series 1 and series 2 trucks? As I said, I only have experience with series 1 discos.
Thanks again, it looks like I'll be back on the forum more often.

Search is your friend here, this topic has been beat to death. $4k seems a little high for an SD with over 100k. I would ask if the headgaskets have been done and look for any coolant loss. Do you have access to the complete maintenance records?
Watch out for:
1. Front drive shaft (has it been replaced?)
2. Coolant loss and temps (if you have an ultraguage bring it on the test drive)
3. Any ticking in the engine at idle after warm up?
4. Check that all lights in the instrument panel are lite with the key in.

for $30 bucks you can test the head gaskets for yourself and don't need to take his word. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/li...FSFo7AodPQUA-A
Also, crawl under the car and look above the starter and at the top of the bell housing. I head gasket leak will leave a thick layer of sludge all over the starter heat shield and bell housing.

Good luck! All of the advice above is good advice! Wish we would have checked our system for coolant leaks before we purchased a '99 D2 along with the air suspension. Already replaced the previous rear air suspension w/ coils & now we are replacing the viscous fan, radiator, thermostat, and coolant reservoir. Previous owner was mixing water with green & red coolant. Bad combo + previous owner with no LR knowledge = unhappy radiator.

Also look at the coolant - how does it look? Clear, no oil on top? Look at the engine oil - clear, with no sludge?
Also look inside the oil filler cap, a little condensation is normal, but not a load of sludge.
Finally, with the engine idling and the engine not hot (be careful!), take off the coolant filler cap and check that you don't have a bunch of bubbles coming up through the coolant.
Mark, You were given the answer to that in the oil thread but you did not appear to be receptive to the advice of those who've been there and done that.
For the rest of the readers try Rotella 15w40 for a few 3k oil changes. The detergents in this oil may help clean things out enough to make the tick go away, if you are lucky.
If that doesn't work, see the thread by the guy who solved his tick by replacing the cam shaft, lifters and rocker assembly.

If that doesn't solve the issue then you have a slipped liner which i believe to be less common than the forums would indicate. Slipped lines are due to overheating the engine. See the thread about the guy who put his block on a BBQ grill.

I got mine for 4k with head gaskets redone and 123k on it. It is a '99 Series II...SES light was on. Radiator had been replaced but had a bad hose and was dripping. SES flagged the MAF so I replaced that and got a new radiator hose for $550.00 and that cleared the codes and I got it inspected. A week later they said I needed a new master brake cylinder so I got that rebuilt and also replaced broken engine mounts and got the engine oil flushed and replaced for $1200.00. One week after this...the oil pressure light wouldn't go out and it started ticking when idling in driveway so there went the oil pump. Along with a timing cover and a gasket or two for the new oil pan, I paid $1300.00 to fix 'er up. A week after that...The Three Amigos popped on while driving. It's been a week and the Three Amigos haven't shown up since then so I am assuming that's a bad ground, which isn't too bad I assume. But now it runs lovey dovey. So really, it's a $7,000.00 Disco II. I've had it a month and I still can't drive it without constantly and nervously checking the panels for warning lights. But that's just mine.
