Those "oops" can be more expensive on this than they would on a Ford, Chevy, Jeep, etc., but the people that continue to drive these things know that. And, the only people that continue to drive these are the people that have an inexplainable affection for them. If mine had had a Ford, Chevy, etc. badge on it and the problems I've had I would have already gotten rid of it. I, personally, can't justify love of British vehicles in terms of reliability or money - only the driving experience (when it is functioning properly... haha). I will add, though, I also love my four-cylinder car when the gas prices head skyward.

As a side note, I still have my 1977 CJ-7, too. Wouldn't trade that thing for anything. It's been in my family longer than I have and was first vehicle. You have good taste, man.

Well thank you sir! I just have rode in the discovery's and fell in love with them! I would really like to have one, I would get an older one like a 1998 but I dont want something with a lot of miles im afriad it may screw up! So something with 70,000 miles or less. But now im afraid that I maybe getting something that maybe a money pit where I got to spend a lot of money to keep it going. If its just typical stuff, oil change, grease, fluids and the driveshaft I can handle that. But anymore than that Im not to sure about!

Im looking at getting a Jeep Wrangler as well... What is all of your ideas on that? Like I said im only 20 and I make decent money. But not enough to throw into keeping a car running!

having owned a 06' rubicon and now a 04 LR i would not hesitate in telling you to get a LR.

you may end up paying a bit mor ein upkeep, but consider the buying price of 2 similar vehicles in terms of year, mileage, and price. you will spend 2X more on a jeep easily. and you will get less in terms of usability and practicality. and you will simply have a jeep just like the other 20 you will see in a parking lot. at least with a rover you will have a bit of class and style to go along with it.

I will say that I love my Disco on the good days, but if I could go back to the day I bought it - knowing what I know now - I would not have purchased it. I didn't really even need it then. It was just another vehicle and slowly became a daily driver at certain times of the year. Some people have good luck with them, and some have bad luck with them. I have been in the middle. I have done the routine maintenance and have still had extra problems. A short list of mine is as follows:
-2 window motors
-1 window regulator
-intermitten wiper switch
-windshield washer pump
-cargo door lock assembly
-wheel bearing/hub assembly
-and, now, ABS shuttle valve

I don't want to steer you clear or make up your mind, but I would have appreciated individual experiences laid out for me like this before i purchased. I personally love the tried and true Wranglers. The abundance of factory and performance parts and parts suppliers for them in this country is a major plus. And... a Wrangler may look like the other 20 Wranglers in the parkinglot, but if the aftermarket can help solve that. If Wranglers (and Toyotas and Hondas, etc.) weren't good at doing WHAT THEY ARE INTENDED TO DO, they wouldn't sell so many of them. But as sloppyjoe said, it won't have the interior space/utility of the Rover or the leather seats and looks when you take your date out to dinner (if that's an important factor in your purchasing decision. It was for me at my time of purchase.).

If you get a Rover it will be the tallest car in the parking lot, make it easy to find.
Here are the common faults with DII's, head gaskets, air ride suspension going bad, the 3 amigos, window regulators, door lock actuators.
Here are the common faults with DI's, door lock actuators, cruise control, ABS and the center differential lock shifter not working.

DI's are by far cheaper to maintain, cheaper to repair and they get the same MPG as a DII.
DII's have more interior room and a nicer ride.
Personally I would buy a DI, take your time and shop around and find a good one. Took me 9 months to find the right truck for me. I researched and drove DII's, DI's, Range Rovers, Freelanders and a LR3 before I descided on a DI. Then I found the perfect one for me, a high mile one owner, and we are in love. Our love grows everyday.
Most DI repairs can be done by a shadetree mechanic, most DII repairs can be done by a good shadetree mechanic.

It has already been said, if you buy a Jeep that is fine, but you will be just like everybody else.
Rovers are not for everyone.
And remember that all Land RoverREQUIRE premium gas.

look around and find the right truck,,,

i tested several rigs. lr3's, D1 and D2's. i wanted a 04 based on what i had read here. knowing the common issues and my abilities to fix 90% of them myself was a big deal.

find the right seller who is open to telling you everything about the rig. i dealt with a local LR dealer who tried to sell me an 03 S for $16k with 39k miles and the amigos were lit and the transfer case growled when engaged and they tried to sell that to me as being common. i did not buy that nor did i buy the salesmens lines of BS.

im in sales and know when i am being jerked around, and i pride myself in the fact that i am not thought of as a salesmen to my customers. buts that is neither here nor there.

the point is to do a lot of checking around and go and drive the rigs. find the one that speaks to you and all will work out for the best in the end.

Land Rovers are like women, you must find the one that is right for you. She will give you trouble and you will want to leave her on the side of the road from time to time.
But you will work through it and you both will have a long, meaningful and happy life.

Hey, I'm up here in Knoxville, Tenn and I have a really nice 2000 discovery SE model Range Rover I am looking to sell. It has 108K miles on it and is in excellent shape. Clean leather interior, seats 7, has the brushguard package on it, and has had all sensors replaced (OS2, Mass airflow, etc) no warning lights on at all. If you are intersted call me at 865 982-7000 #7224 for more info. I am asking $6250 for it. Thanks.
