Default Looking at growing my rover family (P38)

Looking at P38 tonight Hey guys, I posted this in the RR section but I think the D2 owners are probably just as knowledgeable if not more.

So I am going to look at this P38 tonight (2002 Land Rover Range Rover 4.6 HSE SUV, Crossover | used cars & trucks | Kingston | Kijiji)

I currently have a 2003 discovery SE7 that I have put a lot of blood sweat and tears over the last year. This being said I came across this p38 that is local to me that is currently a 2 owner truck that looks spotless. He claims everything works in it runs flawlessly as his daily driver. I know he hasn't done the HG yet but at this time the truck doesn't require it. I know what to look for when buying a D2 but not a P38. Any words of advice?

Truck comes with the RR sport wheels with new tires and brakes as well as a set of hurricane 18'' with some other tires as well as plethora of summer and winter genuine floor mats.

Thanks family

P38 always get a bad wrap a lot of air ride and electrical grembins. If you can stick it out most of imformation is out thier. When they are dailed in one of tbe best riding cars out there. You cant believe LR could also build a Discovery.
as for the 02 boshe i cant say much i have a gems. But the RR is a different short block than the Discovery, so thats a good sign. Yes the RR blocks are always stamp 3/4 - 1 point higher compression

It's basically the same engine, so the big question (already answered) is head gaskets.

I'd get under it with a flashlight and look at the front and back under the heads. I bet there's a leak.

Also, front prop shaft? I bet it's a similar situation.

You might ask what oil he's running. If it's not diesel oil, the top end likely has a good bit of wear.

I love P38s. I wish I had gotten one instead of my Disco.

Well, It drove as nice as it looks. I am in love. On a scale of 1-10 it's a 9. Only issues are... I brought my ultra gauge with me and the truck seems to run between 202-205deg. He hasn't done any work to the engine or cooling system and I notice the fan clutch span rather freely after our drive. I suspect a new water pump thermostat rad flush and fan clutch would do the job.

The front main seal is leaking but not that bad. I guess I could rebuild the front cover with a new oil pump and timing chain and such as I did on my d2.

Thoughts?

You were absolutely right, it drives so much better and rides nothing like a d2. You would never think they were made by the same company.

He didn't know a whole lot about the truck as he mostly had it worked on my the Porsche specialty shop he goes to. (Ownes a half dozen). From what I could tell it was a nice one to own but I got to figure out a reasonable price. When I asked about oil he didn't know... ( I run shell t6). Head gaskets didn't seem to be leaking but you're probably right. If they are not yet then then they will shortly.

Does anyone know if there is such a thing as a lower temp thermostat for these trucks. It's too bad they don't run the same coolant hose layout as the d2. Forgot to mention he was still using dexcool
