How long did it take you to get the truck back home??

 

My wife's '97 had LT265/75R16 buckshot mudders on it when we bought it. The Disco turning radius sucks enough, I took them off as soon as I could.

 

Silver lining I guess. I had been trail riding all day with 5 people in the Rover, later that night I was trying to climb a small but extremely steep hill right next to my house when the blow happened. Towed it to work, waited a week for the diff to show up, 10 spline diff showed up, waited another week for the 24 spline. 2 weeks off the road, lesson here is, get HD shafts and better diffs.

 

I would not run anything but stock/original size tire since I only drive to the mall but it looks like no one knows the answer to the original question (widest?).

 

It was answered by tire size, a 245/75/16 is a good size tire at 31"s tall and slightly less then 8"s wide. This size tire up-grade makes for a much better ride over the 255's and improves traction and clearance off road.

 

235 85 is a nice, tall, skinny tire too.

 

I don't know if it's just me or what, but when a guy comes on here looking for answers, it seems that nobody wants to really tell him what he wants to hear. The only answers I see are what certain people think (in their opinion) you should do to your truck. Maybe he doesn't off road at all... maybe he just wants the look. Hell, half the big off-road trucks you see on the road today with big tires and lift kits have never seen dirt. It's all for show nowadays. And, that is perfectly OK.

Now, on the flip side, I know some of you are trying to protect the guys ride and say, "if you do this, it won't work or something will break". But, maybe you should find out why he wants what he wants before you go off on a tangent. Also, the person asking the question should state whether or not it's going to be used for off-road or not.

I'm with the OP, though. I will be adding a 2" lift and I want to know what is the widest, tallest tire that will fit with a 2" lift. I have the stock 18" rims (no, I'm not going to 16" rims). No, I do not go off-roading. Realistically, probably will never go off-roading. Of course, what I call off-roading is probably completely different that what others consider. Going down a gravel road or dirt road with a couple mud puddles 6" deep is not what I call off-roading, that's just normal, every day driving where I am from.

Partly because he didn't provide any info on how the vehicle will be used or how tall he wants to go.
Not factoring in bead width limitations, how wide you can go is affected by how tall you want, and vice versa.

And I know that everyone's description of "off-road" can be completely different. But, in all of this, there still wasn't a decent answer of the biggest tire he can use on his 16" rims with a 2" lift.

 

Lots of opinions out there. I put 285/75/16 under my disco with 2" lift. I later added a 1" body lift but it was fine with the 2". It did rub a bit in front at full lock. Drove fine, was and still is great off-road with no gear changes. I love it.
This is my own experience, yours may be different.
