Default Losing Power on Steep UpHill

Hello all I am a fairly new Land Rover owner, I bought a 2001 Disco 2, V8 couple of months ago which I enjoy driving a lot now.

Recently I noticed on a steep hill the car loses power and just barely moves on I mean like walking speed, it does finish the hill. I never came to a full stop and even I did stopped fully it continues on the same way uphill, the max rpm is 1800 or so never goes more than that even full throttle. On normal hills I have no problem and on the highway as well no issue with power, even tried 160kmh/100mph without any issue.

What can be the issue I tried couple of times we have a very steep hill here and every time I lost power and just barely moved on, after the hill flattened car gets back underway.

Also, time to time on regular city roads, I encounter an increase in power when I reach around 2800-3000rpm. Until there the car acts a bit more stubborn to accelerate but then when it hits around 2800rpm it kicks you back.

Appreciate any ideas or any one that had similar issues.

Thank you.

Sounds like a transmission problem, try manually downshifting on the same hill. It would appear the transmission is not downshifting, which could be a few things so you are stuck in the drive and the rpm will keep dropping.

The other thing to try is to press the sport mode switch so the S lights up on a quiet stretch of road, while you are stopped, Then punch the throttle to the floor if all is right with the world you rev up through 4000 rpm then drop off as you ease off the throttle.

Also does your engine rev freely in neutral without hesitation

It could be other things but start there.

Hello thank you for your message.

Yes I have no problem on reving on neutral, easy to rev. On idle sometimes the car like shivers but I aim to change the spark plugs, wires and coils at a point as well as I dont trust the previous owner.

When I put the throttle to the floor on S mode I can go over 5000 as well even though initial up to 3000 still feels a bit stubborn but not much at all. On straights its very good. The S mode also makes a difference on the behaviour of the car.

I tried the same hill on S mode as well no change it took a bit longer to slow yes but still it slowed down and the same thing happened. I also tried to downshift myself from D to 3-2-1 and nothing happened basically it stayed the same.

“Stayed the same” means it doesn’t shift down? Even when you select it manually?

Yes exactly even I shift manually from D to 3-2-1 it does not make any difference. Stuck at around 2000rpm.

I dont have any problems on regular hills I can speed up and climb and so on or on straights but just at this very steep hill. I also tried low gear as well with a full stop in the middle of the hill but except the initial kick it also struggled.

One more note, if I start that climb in manual mode in 1st gear the car also struggles and gets stuck again around that 2000rpm level as well. The climb is very near to my house and I use that road time to time so I can try other combinations any time. The car never comes to a complete stop it just continues on with walking speed.

I think the 2 most common transmission issues are incorrect fluid level, and (believe it or not) low voltage. The transmission ECU seems to be very finicky with the voltage it needs. How is your alternator? And for fluid level, there are numerous threads here on how to check it properly.

Thank you for the comments, I will check what you have mentioned and then hopefully it is an easy fix. I tend to show it to a workshop that is specialised on transmissions as well if I have the time.

Thank you for your comments I will check what you have suggested and will see how it goes, hopefully it can be a quick fix.

You may be lucky and not need a transmission shop. It could be as simple as servicing the fluid properly, or an alternator replacement or something related.

After all I took it to a mechanic as the rest was ok, my gas pedal was empty in the beginning so I had to push more to get accelaration or feedback let me say. So he adjusted tge kickdown cable as the previous owner set it for less gas probably for less consumption. Now the throttle kicks in inmediately when I touch my foot on the pedal. Today I tried the same hill again, initial run with a bit of speed and full throttle it was a success. So the car was able to go to 3000 rpm and above with downshifting. But on the second run I stopped at the beginning of the hill and then started climbing, the car did not down shift again. It started slow but it was better than the previous situation, I was able to come up to 2000rpm and a bit above where previously it stuck aroun 1800. Also I stopped again in the middle of the climb and moved on again its the same no downshifting. Also I tried D-3-2-1 combo too as previously this time when I moved from D to 3 the rpm lowered from 2000 to 1700ish, then to 2 and 1 it picked up the rpm to around 2000 level and steadily moved on. One more thing I noticed is after the second run when I reached a flat surface a kind of clunk/chunk noise came from kind of infront of me underneath. Under the steering or near to the pedals a noise like a tock noise kind of. But then the car again was able to do 4000rpm down shift immediately with no problem.

appreciate your all comments thank you
