Default loud noise at 45 mph???

I drive a 2003 se, when i hit around 45 mph, there is a loud hum like bad road noise, then sometimes a fastvibration sound. Its coming from thedrivers side. I cant tell if its fore or aft, but it sure is loud. Any ideas would be great. thanks.

Have your double cardon joint replaced with greaseable u-joints ASAP!
I would have it towed to a shop and have the double cardon looked at straight away to see if it is about to fail, if it fails you will be buying a new transmission.
Disco2Guy has some pics of what will happen.
Any shop can do the double cardon, $200-$300. New transmission $7000.
Once that is done if it still does it then have the tires looked at.
Rotate them from side to side to see if the noise moves to the passenger side.

Buy the right parts the first time. It does cost more than a rebuild, but you get peace of mind and a good warranty. I had them make mine a little longer to accommodate any future lift I go with.

Cheers,

Pete

I went with the one mentioned above and even though I had some minor vibration issues with the first one they sent me, they sent me another one to replace it (they paid for shipping and all). Great customer service and a burly shaft.

Could also be a tire that is cupped. They get like that if they are not rotated often. But like Spike says a greasable u-joints in the driveshafts are a must for the Disco 2. They will fail at some point. You can grab the driveline and feel for movement in the u-joints. Mine were totally dry and worn when I changed them.

Well, I know mines a diesel, but the driveline is the same. Before I fitted my new tyres which was also before the shaft rebuild btw, I had / have a vibration at 60 mph. So since then BOTH shafts fullyrebuilt, new roto flex, and new tyres, and still have same vibration. So it leads me to think its something else. Have not found what it is yet, but hopefully I will get to the bottom of it.

Im leaning towards possible bearing wear on output of TX box, or diff pinion bearings or a handbrake / drum "issue" or even engine / autobox or TX boxmountings. I have read 100's of posts all over the web, and its quite common that even after shaft replacements, on both diesels and V8's,vibrations are still there.

Rick,
I would also have some one look at your tires, make sure you don't have one coming apart.
If it is the drive shaft, stop driving it TODAY, if it fails, as already mentioned, you could be looking at a tranny also.
