Default LR D2 MAF Sensor Recommendations

Anyone have a recommendation for a MAF sensor.

Should I "bite the bullet" and go with the OEM Bosch or use a different (read cheaper) manufacturer.

FYI, I have a 4.6HSE with secondary air (that's what the air injection system is called, right) so the intake and throttle throats on the MAF body are a little bigger (~4mm) than non-SA motors, right?

Searched the forum but did didn't get any results in spite of this being a common maintenance part (right?).

And should I buy just the sensor or the whole body?

@austinlandroverbill I would 100% recommend getting the Bosch part. I bought a used MAF and ended up being bad, threw a check engine light etc. Bought the Bosch MAF and have been good to go.

I think most folks will tell you that D2's really like the Bosch parts. Seems like it's worth buying the right stuff.

I bough the whole MAF assembly off of parts geek for $130 or so. Best price I found on genuine Bosch. You can buy just the sensor, but you will need the right tool to pull it out.

I've installed several Delphi MAF sensors for customers without any issues. It will come with new screws and a bit to remove the old one as well.

Thanks.

I pulled the sensor and cleaned it already, so no biggie there -- used a security bit set from Harbor freight, worked fine.

Again, my worry is that if I buy an MAF sensor + body, I may get the slightly smaller one for non-secondary air vehicles that wont fit the airbox or throttle body ends.

Any Bosch part number for a secondary air equipped 4.6 HSE?

I save $$$ and get the sensor itself as they're identical between a 4.0/4.6L engine. The difference = the housing itself.

@Best4x4 is right. I think our same MAF sensor itself fits a few Audis, VWs, Minis and BMWs but at a cheaper price.

To @Best4x4 ’s point, I’ve heard the same about the Delphi Sensor.

Also, now that’s it’s mentioned, I think I bought a MAF for a BMW that is the exact same let as the D2 part. I’d have to go back and look, but I believe there’s another vehicle out there with the same exact sensor and housing.

JUKE179r, can you point me to a part number?

And do I have it right about the secondary air injection engines have a slightly larger diameter MAF?

I think the different diameters are '99-'02 vs. '03-'04, not SAI vs. non-SAI.

For what it's worth, I stumbled across some info on Tornado Systems website, the guys in the UK who do re-mapping of the V8 ecu. They recommend changing the MAF after 80-90k and say that the ECU is sensitive to the original Bosch part (MAF) if a re-mapped ECU is used. I have a stock ECU, so I have no experience with this, just found it interesting to consider. I can't find a history item for my '00 saying the MAF was ever changed, so i believe mine is original @ 160k miles. I can see the desire to go aftermarket with this part tho, the price difference between it and the Bosch part is pretty big.
