Lubing the D2's hood release cable?

Lubing the D2's hood release cable?
Where and how do I lubricate my hood release cable?
The hood release cable pulling mechanism, in the driver's compartment, broke years ago. I've been using vice grip pliers to pull the end of the cable to release the hood.
I'd like to get around to replacing the cable pulling mechanism but I must lubricate the cable or it's not going to work etc. (I've also noticed it's getting harder and harder to pull that cable and it probably won't be long before it completely fails etc)
Alternatively, can anyone suggest a reason for just replacing the old cable with a new one? Is it a PITA to replace?
Thanks,
Thomas

The same hard to pull behavior happened with mine.
Before risking breaking the hood release handle or cable, decided to ensure that I would be able to open the hood trough any event.
Implemented an 'emergency' way to release and shows here :

To loop the galvanized wire on the lever, I had to loosen the latch. When I had the latch loose, used the opportunity to lubricate its mechanism, and ended with the hood release handle smooth as new.
Now I have an easy smooth release and a safe second release method.
I did not lubricate the cable, just the hood latch and got cured.
Hope it helps.
