Default M & S lights

So there I am driving my 02 Disco when the low fuel light comes on. I'm less than a 1/4 mile from the gas station when all of a sudden I feel this clunk sound from the transmission and then the check engine light comes on along the with M & S lights on the dash flashing and the D ( drive ) are all blinking. I'm thinking I have just run out of gas & sucked evrything dry in the fuel system, but the engine is still running. So I kill the motor and after I fill up with fuel the engine wont crank. So I get it towed home, as the tow truck driver is filling out the paperwork I try to start the engine and it starts. All of the blinking lights have stopped & the check engine light is gone. So I'm thinking no big deal, I just ran outof gas. The next day I'm headed out of town & no more than a mile up the raod the hole ordeal happen again. I hear this clunk sound in the transmisson, the check engine light & the blinking M & S lightd are back. As I start through the light I notice I'm needing to rev the engine to 3000 RPM before the vehicle will begin to roll, its like I'm starting off in 4 th gear or something. So I get home unpack & repack vehicles, yesterday when I get home the engine starts right up again, the M & S lights are not blinking but the check engine light is on. Does anyone know if its a sensor or something. I'm very new at the Landrover scene. I have owned it for less than 2 weeks. Thanks for anyones help.

I would highly recommend you first get the autobox serviced with a new oil and filter and go from there.

If it was just the M and S lights but no "clunk" , I would suggest your battery is on the way out, but a clunk from the autobox concerns me and is not a good sign, but it really needs a service to see if thats the issue before you "dig" any further.

Urban Panzer, thanks for the information. Just to help me understand more. How will new oil & a filter help out the situation if this is the issue. And what are you refering the autobox to, the transmission. Or is this something completey different, is this something I can perform myself.

my 99 is doing the exact same thing. Had the m&s lights coming on, without problems starting the truck, about a month ago changed out batteries with my other disco and all has been well until 2 days ago. Now I'm getting the M&S flashing with same startup problems as DiscoveryHouston. It is trying to start but doesn't even begin to turn over. It acts like it is not getting fuel.

Im going to drop the transmission pan today and change the filter & fluid. ANd hopefully that makes a change. I was reading, that when these lights come in my case the transmission was going into a limp mode, so it protects itself. I'll keep you posted.

The M&S lights are designed to activate when having an actual tranny issue but tend to come on for frequently for a low voltage problem which can then cause the truck to go into limp mode and not go thru the proper shift sequence and have no power.
I would, as suggested service the tranny and also clean and tighten all your battery and ground cables. Once that is done, go to your local parts store and have then do one of their free battery/alternator tests. Should show voltage between 13.6 and 14.4 volts, if not then get that corrected.
Let us know what you find.

I had the same problem. Turned out to be the CKPS. Went into 3rd (clunked) M&S flashed for emergency driving (limp mode). When hot and turned off vehicle, would crank but not start. When cold would start, but shortly thereafter woul clunk and M&S would come on. If you have tried the previous suggestions, check the Ckps. Unfortunately, it doen't seem to throw a code on the OBD II scanner. Might require Testbook to diagnose/verify.

DiscoMike & CCROVERSE01 you guys have both hit the nail on the head. I had just returned from Dallas and the Disco ran like a top. Parked it for a few days, went over to a friend house and thats when I felt the clunk type sound at about 35-40 MPH. Bascially what your saying CCROVER ( 3rd gear range ), and thats when the M & S lights & Service enigine light came.

So to kind of answer my question where do I start. What should I be looking for or doing to fix this. I have'nt checked voltage yet, but I ran the battery on auxillary for like 5 hours Sunday and it fired right off. But I guess it would'nt hurt to check voltage just to eliminate that therory. I did run a scan on the engine and I had a bad crank case sensor. I changed out that bad boy & that stopped the dying engine. ONe guy on here said to drop the transmission oil pan and change out the oil & filter. I have since done the pan drop but have'nt put it back togther. So at this point this is where I'm at with this whole M & S light mystery. I will keep ya'll updated as I Sherloc Holmes this issue. Later...

CCROVER, I forgot to ask what is a CKPS... for some reason I want to say crank case pressure sensor. If so that is a BRAND new install this past weekend.
