Default Mass Air Bad!

Talked to Disco Mike, discovered my MAF was bad. Thanks Mike, big help. Ordered up a new one, but until it arrives, I was wondering if it would hurt anything to just unplug it and run without it. Did it in the driveway and it idles better without it and will now exceed 3000 rpm's. Just want to know if it will hurt anything since it doesn't work anyway. Thanks

I had this issue my disco ran like crap. consumed mass quanities of gas. you could see black smoke blowing out the back. fouled my plugs.oil wastainted with gastill finally it just didn't want to run. listen to mike, if you don't have to drive her, then don't.I was almost rear ended due to lack of power. don't do it.

I only drive when I have to, but it is my only car. The speed limit on base is only 30, and she reaches 30 o.k. Anything after 30 takes a while. The only time I drive off base is to take my wife to work. Sounds like yours was running rich, mine is running lean.

My only concern is that by unplugging the MAF, you cause the ECU to run in full rich mode and can really foul the engine.

I thought about that, but it was running really lean, now it seems to have made it a little better, but I don't want to break something else. I can't get above 40 though with it plugged in. Haven't tried it yet without it, afraid to. Thanks.

Try it and see, if you get more speed and your tail pipe doesn't soot up I'd say go for it.

Well how common is it for a mass air to go bad and run rich? I am throwing a mass air rich code but it is a brand new mass air it started throwing the code days after I put it in and I can't do anything about trading it for another because it was an electrical item that I installed and they said to many variables to see if it was the mass air meters fault or mine etc. etc. Mine seems to have more power at times but also don't idle well and dies at redlights often and blows black smoke at idle a lot turns my leg black with wetblackresidue ifI stand behind it.

Also is there any chance a dry air filter could kill a MAF from to much air. I mentioned this before I put my stock air box on fora few days and nothing changed so I was wondering if I just recieve a dud MAF or any chance the cold air intake killed it before I swapped. I thought that is unlikely but I don't know what my problem is.

When you installed the new MAF, did you run it with an oiled filter at first like a K&N?

No not at all that is why I had to buy a new mass air because my K&N killed two and I got rid of thatK&N quickly, and now I still have problems. I made absolutely sure this filter is dry based also.
