Default Max Tire Size and Front Axle Lock

Hello, newbie 2002 Disco2 owner here.
She needs new tires and I want to put the biggest tires on it that will fit without rubbing.
I was hoping I could go with some 265/65-18's... suggestions???
Also, this model is full-time 4WD with only a Hi/Low selector and the front axle seems to always be locked. It chirps on sharp turns. Is this normal or should I be concerned?
Thank you in advance for your input...

There are no lockers in your vehicle, so the chirping is something else, hopefully not your drive shaft. Has your front drive shaft been replaced?

How many miles on your truck, have you rebuilt or replaced your front drive shaft yet?
As for the 4wheel rating on your truck, you have about 1.5 wheel drive with no CDL t/case of diff lockers.
Are you still on the original suspension, what sort of wheeling, if any, do you do? If your truck is stock, I wouldn't recommend 285's cause you will rub with out a lift.

Thanks for the quick response.
I have read the recommendations for the driveshaft u-joint replacements and have purchased the u-joints.
The truck has 72,000 mi in good condition (no leaks, etc)
Have replaced ALL fluids.
Still on original suspension.
Bought the truck for my daughter to drive to high school and back (less than 5 mi).
Truck is stock.

Plan on replacing u-joints and tires soon, (before daily driving).
Haven't driven much since purchase because of the driveshaft issues, but truck runs good.
It IS a little thirsty... but I knew that going in...

Not sure I understand how the driveshaft would cause the front axle to lock on turns or stay locked, but I'm no 4wd mechanic...

its not locking. it is a slip differential until a locking mechanism is activated. all wheel drive.
the chirp could be from the tension in turns put on a faulty drive shaft

I'm not saying anyone is wrong here.
I'm sure you guys all know more than me, but it sure feels like the two front tires are "locked" when I make a sharp turn. The chirp I'm describing is the squeal of the inside or outside tire trying to turn at a different revolution than the other tire but it can't because its locked into the same revolution as the other side. The two front tires are locked, and I'm not saying its NOT the driveshaft, I'm just wondering how the driveshaft could cause that.
And if its NOT the driveshaft, what else should I check on this vehicle if the front axle is locked all the time?
Thank you.

If the locking mechanism is malfunctioning, how does one check or repair that? Has anyone ever heard of one of these mechanisms failing? How is that repaired?
