maybe returning, but first new question
for those of you who remember me, hello, for those who dont, i had a 95 disco, went from some minor repairs to wtf in about 2 years, am mechanically inclined and did most of the work on my truck, then just constant grind of,"cant open rear hatch", to,"gurgling when i start up", well have the car of my dreams,02 x-type jaguar sport, and am blessed with a few extra dollars, approx,$4k, what rover product would you buy for a second vehicle, and why, then maybe my decision will be easier. Thanks, Bill
really want to explore the outdoors a little bit. yes $4k total. enjoyed the disco, but have seen some really nice rangies and wouldn't mind the extra gadgets.
ORIGINAL: AK Rover
I got my 97 Discovery LSE for $3700. With tax and title was just over $4k in Colorado. So far it has proven to be a good use far that 4 grand.

Read through this.
But for $4,000 you will be looking at '98-'99 DI's in good shape or '99-'01 DII's in not so good shape.
As far as Range Rovers go, you will be looking at late '90's in not good shape.
think I might be headed for a d1 again, seemed pretty straightforward and was fun in snow, haven't had a lot of offroad expereince, but would love to start. so far we may have a winner with a d1, but would like any other input, thanks,Bill
You can not go wrong with a Disco I,, Locking transfer case no, 3 amigos
The biggest thing is use dielectric grease on all the electric plugs.
It will most likely need a little work ,, drive and make sure that the transfer case
works,,,,,,,,,have fun.

I would go for a 99/2000 D2. You can still lock the x-fer case like a D1, but you get all of the goodies. That said, you may have to contend with the 3 amigo's at some point. I love my 97, but I am working furiously to drop a 4.6 in a 2000. I drove it for a couple of weeks and was thinking of buying it, and he popped a radiator hose in traffic and didn't shut it off. I got it for $2K instead of $6K. Anyway, point is, I liked the D2's ride. Took it on a few light trails and it handled just fine. Kinda like the traction control too. He always smoked me in the snow. Main drawback of the D2 is the 3 amigo's and the extended trunk for offroad. In town, I like the extra cargo...
DI all the way. They are simplier, few electrics to go wrong. No they dont ride as nice and are alittle smaller cargo room. But for your price range you will be hard pressed to find a DII in good enough shape to just buy and drive.
