Default Mercedes and a Disco...

Ok, here's the question. Mercedes OM602 I5 in a 95 Disco? Had a merc fall in my lap for nothing. Was looking at other diesels but finding Isuzu's or 300 TDI's in Interior Alaska is like finding an honest man in the Whitehouse. Can a Merc 300 fit a ZF or will I have to put in a different tranny? Adapter plate fabrication is not an issue, got that covered. Replacing that abomination of a 3.9 is a must at this point and I'm partial to diesel anyway. So send any suggestions please. Im retiring soon and wont have anything to do but tinker and experiment.

This place might be able to help you. You would be better off with a 5 speed. The ZF auto has different shift points then the diesel ZF auto. Those Mercedes get good mileage, it won't very fast though.

Mercedes uses their own transmissions not the ZF. I would love to see pics when you get it done! I recently had the pleasure of driving a 300 SDL with the rod bender I6 and it was amazing, smooth and very quick.

I just emailed the seriestrek guy yesterday. Will let ya'll know the outcome of that. I read somewhere earlier about maybe adapting the zf transfer case to the merc tranny but i wouldnt know where to start with that one. Simple plate or is it more involved? I have been told OM602 is one of the better diesels around so I think it would be a good choice if I can make it work. Mileage is great especially where I am at. Im getting a little longer in the tooth and dont much care for speed anymore so thats okay. Want a rock crawler more than anything. Appreciate the input

Are we talking about a DI or a DII? DI is a better choice for conversions like you are talking. Fewer electronics and stronger axles.

d2luvr, he says its for a '95.

dreager, I like this idea and REALLY like your honest man in the white house analogy but I think this conversion would take a lot of fab skills. If you can do it please keep us updated and post pics.

Yeah I missed that one.

dreager, I was on landroversonly this morning and was doing a lot of reading about this very topic. There seem to be some very knowledgeable (been there done that) folks on there. MB 3 litres are one of the big topics in the hybrids section.

here is a short cut: http://www.landroversonly.com/forums/f22/

Ok fellas. After much searching and a few discussions I have figured out that Mercedes is not a good choice unless your Bill Gates. I would basically have to put the Rover on a G Wagon chassis. The Office of What are You Spending Money on Now (Wife) wouldnt go for me spending enough to buy a LR3 to tinker on my 95. I am back to the GM 6.5 L TD. Parts are easily found and reasonable, kits from Marks 4WD make it basically a bolt together job with the hardest part looking to be the wiring. And the wife said yes so we all know the choice was easier. So i guess since I finally have a direction I will start putting it in motion. Have the block and heads for $50 so off toa good start. Scrapped the merc for $150 so Im ahead for now. Will post the progress as I go along if anyones interested.

As an afterthought, why do I have to find stuff in Austrailia about innovative projects like this when I live in America? Have we lost the drive as a people to do crazy, expensive things that dont make a lot of sense to most people?

There's a guy on the local rover forum here that's doing the GM 6.2L conversion on his disco. I can send you a link, I think he's just getting started now. I don't think the 6.5L will fit.

the guys at marks 4wd in australia are telling me it will. the block is same dimensions as 6.2 it's just fitting the ancillaries. they do it to landcruisers on a regular basis and have done several rovers. I would appreciate the link. anything I don't have to figure out myself will be great
