I had a nice loud whine when I let off the gas pedal, and today decided to drain a little of my front diff fluid and see what's in it, and wow......lots of small particles with a few bigger pieces. I guess it's shredding itself. So I need a good used front diff. Where should I start looking? I am located in TN. I have a 2000 Disco 2, so I'm wondering what diffs are compatible with mine? Also, what am I looking at as far as price goes for a good used one and installation? thanks.

Savannah, you'd really buy a whole axle setup? I imagine the weight to be several hundred pounds, as well as the extensive labor to get the sway bar links, breather tubes, drive shaft, springs, shocks, radius arms, abs lines, brake lines, panhard rod, drag link, and track rod. Can't recall if I'm forgetting anything...

 

I found a guy a few miles away parting out a 2000 disco that has both front and rear diffs. What's a good price to offer for these, if they look ok? What do I even need to check for when I go to ensure they are in working order? What else should I pick up if the parts are cheap?

 

How many miles on them, that you need to know as well as inspecting the spider gears for wear.

Thanks for the info. I went to the transmission shop today, and they confirmed that the diff "sounds like it's coming apart". Paul quoted me a good price on a good used diff with a 60 warranty so looks like I'm gonna go that route. A buddy of mine who first diagnosed the problem, said he'd stick it on for $100. Anything else I should get along with the diff before I order? Any seals and whatnot I should pick up? Thanks again.

I have always heard that diffs roar when they are failing. In fact my truck currently has a loud very low pitched tone that kicks in around 65-70 mph. I've been thinking it's the diff and mentally preparing to swap it.

That whine sounds like something else to me. I'm certainly no expert on 4x4s, but hearing that noise I'd think driveshaft or a bearing (possibly in transfer case or in the front diff) before I'd think the gears were wearing out.

And never, ever, ever, ever trust what a transmission shop says. They are the ultimate snake oil salesmen. You're lucky you made it out the door without dropping $3000.
