the only difference between the bumper i posted (the "prerunner") and yours is that mine has the bull bar, maybe 8lb of extra steel, less in chromoly.
in aluminum, the entire bumper would probably weigh slightly more than just a winch by itself.
If i go with steel ill use chromoly so i wont really be saving much if any money by using steel instead of aluminum, and even if i go with aluminum im looking at maybe $200 in materials.
the point of a minimalist bumper like this, aside from weight savings, is to pretty much avoid the bumper every hitting anything. take it all with the tires. obviously it needs to be strong enough to be a jacking point and to hold up to yanking with a winch or another vehicle, but even a steel one like this will never save the vehicle in a crash and steel is still going to bend if you drop the tire off a rock and hard onto the bumper.
ideally, the aluminum itself is very strong, but the geometry of the brackets and the support bars is what will make it strong.
