Default Method to fix over torqued lug nuts?

Tire shops over the course of our 2002's life have really mangled the lug nuts. A 27mm fits good-ish on about 5, and then the rest it almost needs to be pounded on. It seems so wasteful to toss out 15 lug nuts when they otherwise work well. Is there a solution to somehow fix the little steel/tin/? caps that the socket connects with?

I am personally not aware of any way to fix them other than removing the cap entirely. I keep an 1” and 1 1/16” socket on hand to remove the lugs. Overtime they will swell from rust that get in between the cap and the nut. I have reached out to various breakers over the years to get OE replacements that are in good shape.

Only fix seems to get new ones or used from a salvage yard.

To help keep them in good shape, unloosen them first by hand and then use an impact gun. Same goes with putting them on, impact wrench until snug then use a breaker bar by hand to torque. I believe the issue is the impact guns have so much torque they misshape the out part of the lug nut.

I switched to solid lugs that don't have the flimsy covers. Much easier to deal with if they get overtightened.

I can confirm solid RR lugs fit. I too snug with impact and final torque with torque wrench. I snag spares any time i can.

The lug nuts on my most recent purchase are neither 27mm Disco or 28mm P38. I can't seem to get anything to fit. I hate these damn things. I think mollusc has it right.

I have both a D2 and a P38 and they use the same lug nuts taking a 27mm socket.

Probably something to do with Extinct's last post an my poor memory. I pulled a few of a RR in my early Disco days and they are 28mm.
