Default Model Year Parts Compatibility?

Hello,

I have a 1999 Discovery II that's in need of a new motor, my mechanic tells me it's not worth fixing, however I am considering buying another Discovery and just keeping the old one for spare parts.

My question is which years (if any) would be compatible for parts with a 1999? It looks like there were a lot of changes from 1998 to 1999 so it looks like it's going to have to be 1999 or newer but how new?

Any advice would be appreciated. My original LR is in good shape except for the motor. (head gasket to be precise) My mechanic really discouraged trying to repair the existing motor. I've always liked the vehicle and would like to have another one it just seems practical to have the other available for parts as if nothing else it has brand new tires on it.

Sounds like he just wants to buy it from you, or not have to do the job. Perhaps you should call around, or look into doing the head gasket yourself. Does he have any reason to think that there are other engine problems too?

If its just head gaskets, it can and should be done. Most Rovers on the road have had them done or will soon. But if there's more to it...

motor options: used 99-02 DII, new short block from Atlantic British, Turner Engineering, RPI, and I believe some range rover short blocks are the same

compatible parts: hardly any DII parts are compatible with D1's (94-99), DII's started 2nd half of 99. All parts will work with DII's 99-02, and most with 03-04 DII's except things like headlights, bumpers, taillights, and they've got some engine changes with the 4.6L in comparison to your 4.0L

IMO, your mechanic obviously knows nothing about Land Rovers...HG are common and an easy fix...are you losing coolant? Has the engine every overheated?

Your DII will be compatible with other DIIs from 99-02.

Head gaskets are not terminal, they can be fixed and it is a DIY job of you have two hands and basic tools. If it is just blown head gaskets then it will be cheaper and worth it to replace them. A shop will charge you about $2000 for the job, DIY will save you a lot of that. Parts run about $250 for gaskets and bolts, plus maybe $250 for machining the heads, plus $100 or so for misc parts (oil, plugs, wires, coolant, beer, band aids).

Thanks for the quick responses and advice!

I don't have a lot of time to tear into an engine repair myself, nor a lot of the proper equipment.

My mechanic is a good ethical guy and doesn't want to buy the car but I don't think he wants to mess with it partly.

The engine did over heat on my wife as the radiator hose blew on it and it was driven several blocks to get home.

Thanks for the source on the blocks I will google that.
