Default MPG with 10% Ethanol Gasoline

I did some driving this weekend around Southeast Texas and conducted a study on the affect (or is it "effect"?) of gasoline with 10% ethanol as opposed to gasoline with none.

In Houston, Texas, for some reason, we appear to be required to utilize gasoline with up to 10% ethanol. In my hometown of Beaumont, Texas, the gasoline is not identified as having any ethanol.

Bottom line, and this is ALL HIGHWAY DRIVING, when utilizing 10% ethanol gasoline my 2001 Disco got me 13.72 mpg with an average of 70mph. When utilizing regular gasoline I got -wait for it - 17.75mpg at an average of 70mph!!!!!

That is an insane difference! (Frankly, I am just excited that my Discovery can get almost 18mpg - my typical (in city) driving is <13mpg.

Yes, in both instances I was using premium grade Exxon.

(I know that some people here push Shell gasoline, but my old man works for Exxon and thatgasolineput me through school .)

Ethanol is a scam!!

You use more fuel than 10% ethanol makes up for.

I went from 14mpg intown to 11mpg, and from 16 to 17 mpg hwy to 14.5 Best mpg hwy.

Unhookthe spark plugs and fuel injectors to deactivatehalf of cylinders?!. [sm=nerd.gif]Figure out an easy, aftermarket way to apply active fuel management to any vehicle and you'll by rich.
