My Second Post
I just introduced myself in the New Members Forums, but noticed there wasnt much activity there.
I am about to purchase a 1992 Discovery, Automatic with 46,000 one owner miles for $2000
I have skinned a few knuckles in my day, but by no means have a love of turning wrenches...
How would you experienced Land Rover owners rate the reliabillity of the 92 Discovery..
I drove it today and could faintly hear the whine of the Tranny at low speed, I assumed this is normal.
Hopefully I will be lurking in the forums and not posting alot of problems I need help with.
Thanks PANCHO

Where do you live Pancho? The Discovery didn't show up here in the States until 94 so all information prior to that is going to come from "overseas".
I would think that a 92 is going to need some maintenance to be brought current and made in to the reliable vehicle a Rover can be. A lot of Rover owners will neglect the maintenance when they decide to get rid of them or decide it is too expensive. Figure another $1500 on top of the purchase cost to get all the maintenance current, provided there are no major issues like head gaskets.

Maybe it is a 94,
The owner was a Physician, who faithfull had it maintained, he recently died of lung cancer
and I am getting it from his widow. She might have been mistaken when we spoke about the year,
and I did not look at the door tag.
With 46,000 miles I would hope there wouldnt be alot of mainenance needed, what are you referring to regarding maintenence
New Brake Fluid, Transmission Fluid, Oil and the like? This I will do myself, what else?

With only 46,000 miles it sounds like a great deal for $2000. I would bet it is a 94. 94s use a distributor so maybe a new cap, rotor, plugs and wires in addition to changing all the fluids. I wouldn't think there should be any major mechanical issues with that low miles. Having the cooling system pressure tested probably wouldn't be a bad idea either to check for any leaks that are not obvious just by looking. My mechanic charges a half hour shop time to perform the pressure test. It sounds like the owner took good care of the vehicle but even with maintenance things can go bad on a nearly 15 year old vehicle.
That is super low miles man, just change all the fluids and filters.
A new cap and rotor, plugs and wires.
A fresh tank of premium gas and you will be good to go.
Land Rovers require premium gas.
Make sure that you condition the leather every 6 months.
www.atlanticbritish.com has everything you could ever want for the truck.
Also read their "tech tips" on the home page.

CAP and ROTOR!!!!
Awesome..
I was afraid it had electoric ignition...
and being a 94 explains why I didnt see a 92 discovery on KBB.COM
I think im getting a good deal..
Cant wait to get it stuck!!
Oh and the leather is pristine, so I will be following your advice and conditioning it

I question the mileage, way to low for that old of a truck.
You have alot of work to do on this truck before you use it much in the form of fluids and things.
Not know what has been doneand when, plan on doing all this list, if you need help or have question get back to me and I will walk you thru it.
Good luck with the new truck.

And the mileage is correct, family freind, his other vechicle was a Porche 911, perhaps he drove it alot more than the Landy
Thanks very much for your list..
