Default Is my transfer case really getting hot?

So my light came on today
after replacing both temp sensors I have not had the light come back on, until now. I'm about 180 miles away from my house and it happens. I got out and did the quickest test that I could think of which was to unplug the leads to the transfer case. Light promptly went out.
My question is, if you take away the possibility of the wiring error causing the light, what would cause my transfer case to get hot? Low oil is not the issued. However, I do use the sender port as my fill level. Could I possibly have to much oil?
My vents are not clogged either.
Transfer case is supposed to be on the low end of the worry about list.
Any thoughts?

Hi Dusty, it's a weird one. Do you have access to the max/min temperature spec for the transfer case and also one of these IR Thermometer Gun 8:1 | Sper Scientific 800101 | IR Thermometers | Environmental Quality as it might be worth checking the relative case temperatures against the spec. If it is actually overheating and not just an electrical glitch the only thing I could think of is a bearing or bush binding up and overheating which is unlikely. Is your parking brake seized and binding on? as this might be inputting heat into the transfer box via output shaft. As you do a lot of wet offroading and mud plugging that is a distinct possibility.

185 miles left till I reach home and testing gear. if it makes it that far. I will check out brake first and go from there.
if it doesn't I will be walking down I20 and creating new curse word phrases......either way promises to be productive.
I actually have a sender and gauge that I can hook up to the t case......just not with me.

That's a big highway - you reached Ft Worth yet?

Ahhh, you're the Jackson side not Abilene side nearly home then

Do you hear any "whurling" sounds or any indication of a bearing on the verge if failure?

Does the case feel hot to the touch? Like hotter than normal?
