Default need advice on guage cluster work

00 disco

on key on, the MIL, brake warning, ABS, TC and HDC-Failure lights do not come on.

i also noticed, the hill decent light will come on, but after it goes off from check, it wont come back on. if you press the button for hill decent, it chims twice, but the light never goes on.

I don't have the front prop shaft in yet so I don't want to test to see if the ABS and TC lights will come on with a good pedal crush on dirt... but I have good reason to believe they were shut off on purpose.

Now, according to rave, most of those are fuse 27, but the temp guage works and the fuse I pulled is fine, as is the replacement one I put in as a check.

I pulled the top cover off with the two screws and two clips in the back, and removed the 4 screws holding the guage package to the dash. now I found black plastic clips that release the plastic cover/shade off, and white clips remove the back cover and exposes the back of the circuit board.... but I cant figure out how to get in between the two where the led bulbs would be. I was told that perhaps the LEDS where removed, crushed or simply taped over from the inside, but I cant figure how to get into the thing.

anyone with some points and maybe pics or ideas, would be greatly appreciated!

Did you just buy this, wouldn't be the first time some one taped off the lights so he could sell it.

two screws above the steering column and a few clips around the back of the housing it lifts right off. just watch your dimmer. wen i bought mine the guy went in and broke the LED's right off the circuit board.

i got farther then that lol... read above.

there are two different removable tabs, one takes off the back cover, one the front... neither expose where the led's woud be as the circuit board and face cover remain.

This is very common, people just crush the LED's so they dont light up.
I do not know how to get farther in than you already are though, sorry.
Please post once you figure it out.

sorry failed to read the OP. you can't take off the black cover but you can peel it back to see if the LED's are busted. my guess is if you have the cluster out and you don't see black electircal tape on the cover then take a peek behind it be careful not to break it off and you can see if the LED's are broken or taped directly was placed on them. if you are lucky its just tape. if the LED's are busted you have two options. buy a used one from Will tillery at www.roverguy.com or paul grant at paulgrant@mac.com the only problem with that is the odometer will forever blink as the mileage won't be in sync with the ECU. OR you can spend some insane amoutn of money at a dealership and get a new one which they can then use the T4 testbook to sync it with the ECU.

got it... the plastic covers behind the temp/speedo needles comes up itself to reviel reflector channels to each indicator symbol engraved into the plastic cover.

i found 3 pieces of wadded electrical tape in each of the light channels, and guess which ones? mother ****ers.

Notes for anyone who finds themselves in the same situation:

Disconnect battery negative under the hood.

Remove dash cover piece, two screws on either side of the bottom, by base of steering column. Pull up gently on the entire piece on one side and look between the crack that opens between the cover and the top of the guages to see all the way in the back, a metal push tab release...use a long something (i had a skinny bar of metal about a foot long from i have no idea what lol) that slid back to push the metal clip in to release, then repeat on the other side and the entire panel comes up.

Release each of the wiring harnesses that go to the buttons on the dash piece you just disconnected, they are color coded and only fit 1 way so keeping track of them isnt entirely important, and they stay in line on the wiring pretty good too. you do NOT have to remove the dimmer switch on the bottom left, the wire was long enough so that the panel could hang to the floor to the left of the steering wheel withing putting tension on it. plus, it looked like it required 2 screws and perhaps more to remove it, why bother unless your wire isnt as long or is snagged on something.

Move to the top of the guage cluster and remove the two wiring harness on the upper left side, they pop stright out like the other harnesses.

Now move to the 4 screws, one at each corner of the guage face, remove and put somewhere they wont get lost.

Now the entire guage face should slide right up and out, bring it inside or a safe place to work on.

carefully release the clear slide locks all around the outside that hold the plastic sneeze guard on the guages, should come stright off, just push each lock in and pull out in it slightly and it will stay disenguaged as you move on to the next one. I believe there are 3 on top, 3 on bottom, and 1 on each side.

Now do the same thing for the big black plastic sun glare shield that the clear plastic piece u just removed off. its held on only by the same style plastic lockers, push down and up on them one at a time and it comes right off.

now with the guage panel exposed, be very carefull not to scratch it, or break the speedo, rev and temp needles. they dont have to come off for this, i didnt remove them and they didnt get in the way. remove the two screws by the temp needle, and the two by the speedo needle for better access when u lift up the plastic covers.

the entire plastic piece that has the indicator light words on them is a thin piece of plastic that simple folds up. be gentle with it as to not crack it. slowly use a small scewdriver or similiar to pull up the top left corner, and pull it back slowly... just enough for you to see back to the white plastic light channels that direct the led light to the guage words/symbols.

someone filled mine with electrical tape *****, and the plastic cover stuck to it as i was pulling up on the piece, so i gently use a small screw driver to remove the tape from the plastic piece so i could pull it up further.

then, using a 90 degree hook pin (you could probably use a dental cleaning tool or similiar) and a pair of needle nose pliars, i peeled the corners of the black tape ***** away from the edges of the light channels, then pulled them stright out of the channels with the needle nose pliars.

do this for every one you find thats blocked, and hopefully they didnt break the led at the end of the light channel, or use something like RTV to block the light channel. in that case, get inventive but be cautious as to not break the panel!

lay the plastic panel back down, screw in the 4 screws that hold it in place aroudn the temp needle and speedo needle.

now reverse to reinstall! replace glaid shield and sneeze guard, slide guage panel back in, screw in the 4 screws that hold it to the dash, reinstall the two harnesses on the top of the guages, plug the harnesses you removed from the main panel/button piece, tuck the wires in the sides nicely, and slowly slide it back onto the big metal clips, and resecure. reconnect battery, and check to see if they now work!

grab a baseball bat, and break the legs of whom you bought it from. ok, this last step is optional but recommended
