He swapped the 2 and 8 spark plug wires at the coil.

 

I had it taken to a shop that does Landrovers last night. They advised that it is the Catalytic converter. He also said i have CA emissions on the LR and that its over $2k for parts? Sorry to be dumb but is their a way to bypass the CA emissions? We are in PA and he said if he did we would not pass inspections in PA. Is this true?

 

I'm in PA and you definitely needs cats to pass inspection. There are cheaper cats from the aftermarket out there, do a search I think it's been discussed. I also think your old cats are worth money, you can sell them to recoup some of your costs.

Where in Pa are you? There are a couple of good independent shops in the Philly area that may give you better advise than you are getting from your current shop.

 

Rockauto carries, three different, Y pipes with cats for $307 to $429, depending upon brand.

Dayco 18089 - $307
Bosal 099179 - $396
Walker 55417 - $429

They are not CARB compliant. I don't know if PA required CARB compliant cats, I know NY does. If i ever need new cats, I will have them shipped to a friend in NJ and pick them up from him.

 

if you do a search i think Paul Grant posted some numbers for converters that came from summit racing that work and were rather cheap

I am going to have to check myself, but the mechanic that wants to take an arm and a leg said that 2 and 8 were in the correct spots.

The catalytic converters are welded to the Y pipes that go from your exhaust manifolds back to the muffler area. I think I bought the complete setup for just under 300 on ebay. There are three nuts you have to remove from the manifold flange on each side, and two nuts back by the muffler. You remove all four oxygen sensors with either hand tools or a cheap special tool. You also have to remove the crossmember under the transmission unless you get a two piece Y pipe. Then put it all back together. First time with some hand tools should take a couple of hours.

I was quoted more than 260 per cat, before labor, by a muffler shop when I replaced mine. The whole setup on Bay saves you several hundred dollars.

Even if you have to have California emissions cats eBay is the way to go.

Get new.

You should also replace the metal flange gaskets. There are two. Maybe 20 dollars for a set.

The cross member has four bolts on each side. They can be a B to get off without stripping.

In PA you may have some rusted bolts, so have a place in mind to go get new ones.

Check if you are losing coolant after a week or two.
Also ---
If you are losing coolant - it may be going into cylinders #2 and #8
and then into the catalytic converters and ruining them.

What this means..

1) You will need to replace the head gaskets.
2) You may need to replace the catalytic converters if you get the low efficiency codes.
3) Your O2 sensors are ruined - all 4 of them.

The antifreeze ruins the catalytic converters and the o2 sensors.

You can order the catalytic converters as a whole assy.
You just upbolt at the maniford down pipes and at the back of the cats into the exhaust.
