Red face Need help for a christmas present

Hello all, and happy holidays!

I am getting my dad an aftermarket head-unit (single din) for his 2001 non-Harmon Kardon Disco II.

What harness's might I need to make this work. I've googled a bit and in all honesty radios have always left me confused.

I think I need a harness from a website called crutchfield.com, but I'm not sure if the harness depends on the radio I get or vice versa. Any help is appreciated. I'd like to order the harness today and physically purchase any stereo which has the required features in store tonight. Thank you all and again happy holidays.

Best,
Ashtray

edit: I thought I should add, this particular Disco does have the 6? disc changer and the subs mounted on the tail gate. If those could be kept functional that'd be great. The current head unit has totally crapped out that is the reason for this gift.

Go to any local car audio store. Buy a head unit for them and they will get the required harness for you, plus you'll be supporting local business and most of those guys need it.

Alternatively, figure out what HU you're going to buy, then fine it on crutchfield and add it to your cart. Crutchfield will automatically tell you what harness you need. I'd still recommend the local guys, though.

Good advice. I actually am an employee at a ma n' pa music store so I agree with your thoughts.

Call Crutchfield, they will tell you exactly what you need.
If you're close to them in Charlottesville Va, you could pick it up today too.

The cubby opening for the factory head unit is slightly larger than a single DIN slot.

If you were to get an aftermarket single DIN unit, there will be a slight gap at the front bottom part of the cubby slot, i.e., gap underneath the the aftermarket unit.

You will need this trim plate to cover up the gap:

Metra 89-9400 DIN Mountable Trim Plate for 1994-2004 Land Rover Discovery Vehicles (Black)

So I got on the echat help with Crutchfield and they pointed me to the Metra 70-1786 harness. That is available at my local ma n' pa shop I already called them to verify and it's on hold for me. I'm going to see if they carry that Metra 89-9400 trim piece, if not then it is already in my cart on amazon. Now I just need to select a good single din.

Thank you all so much. If I need anymore help I'll just bump this thread.

Happy Holidays!

Just so you know, there are 1.5 din radios available, though a more limited number to chose from.
