Default Need Help ASAP: Motorad 180 Stat

Installed the Motorad stat and temps climbed to 220!! Im 100% sure its installed correctly. I tried to burp the system of air multiple times. Seems air-free. But I do not have heat coming out of the vents.

Please help. What I'm I doing wrong?

The hose on the bottom of the stat is cold (the one that goes into the bottom of the radiator ). The hose coming out pf the top of the stat is bloody hot. And the hose that comes out of the side of the stat and into the water pump is cool/warm.

???

Is the stat faulty?

Am I full of air?

You've most likely got air. The coolant circulates through the heater core all the time. If the top hose is hot, the heater core lines should be also. Take a look at the flow diagram in RAVE. It will help you understand the flow path and what should be hot and what shouldn't be at various engine operating temps.

Huh. I just had a ton of air in the system. I pulled the coolant reservoir and sat it on top the battery box w/ the coolant resevoir cap off and let it sit for 20 minutes. I came back after 20 minutes to see the resevoir just below the mark. I added some coolant refitted the resevoir and fired the truck up. Heat works. Ultra Gague Temps read idle at 190.4

Im stoked!

Yup. Bleeding these things BLOWS! It's no wonder the bleed srews are breaking all the time. You have to use them 20+ times each time you touch the cooling system!

What do temps run at 50 - 60 mph? If you have the gas to play with.

Okay here's what I'm seeing. Not to pleased w/ these results. Hopefully, this Motorad I bought off Amazon is the soft spring 180° stat. The Amazon and my old A.B. stat are both that creme color. However, the Amazon stat has two larger holes and the A.B. stat had four holes. Actually, three holes. One of the holes was plugged w/ a piece of plastic. Must have busted off from the plastic mold.

So far, I'm seeing the same temps as my old stat.

48°F ambient. 113°-129° intake air temp.
Idle= 199.4 ( steady/consistent temp) Very Pleased w/ this reading. Old stat wpuld have read 204°-206°

60-70mph = I have fluctuations. 194° 195.8°,197°, 199° It's weird I never had fluctuations w/ my old stat. I would read a steady ~196° at highway speeds. Do you think I still have air in the system?

I probably wont know until tomorrow morning when I fire it up from a stone cold start. If I hear a waterall then I must bleed it again.

I'm pretty frustrated right now.

From the general consensus I've made from observing many threads, 200F is still in the ideal range.

I installed the Motorad 180 t-stat three weeks ago. I am happy with the new t-stat as I am now running typically 194-196 at idle, 190 on hwy, 198-201 around town. About a 8-10 degree improvement over stock t-stat temps before install. My temps are not as low as some folks have reported, so I plan on removing the radiator for a radiator shop deep cleaning & reconditioning at some point since I do not know the complete history of the cooling system and am at 142K now. I have also not back flushed the heater core yet, so that is on my list as well for general maintenance. But I think I am in pretty good shape now with head gasket job last year, recently new belt, all hoses, Motorad t-stat, belt tensioner, water pump this past summer, and alternator last year, and new bearings for both idler pulleys now in hand to be installed this weekend, I hope. I also have the Torque app on my phone to monitor the engine temps now. Hoping all my maintenance will keep the belt running well and not having any problems with pulleys freezing up and causing an overheating situation. Does anyone know if the Motorad t-stat's fail safe is the open position?

FYI, this is how I now fill my coolant reservoir to minimize air in the system. I pour it slow and this gets it well above the heater core, and allows me to cap it off and run the engine while I can see all around the reservoir and inspect the clamps and hoses that connect directly to it. Give this method a try if you are having issues with air always in your system.
