Default Need Help Please. New Land Rover Owner

Hello Everyone. I am a new owner of a 96 Land Rover Discovery. I have always wanted a Land Rover and now, thru some unfortunate financial events, I am. I was laid off at the end of the summer and my truck was repod a couple of months ago. After child support and all my other bills, I had about 500 dollars left to my name. After searching craigslist for a good month for a $500 vehicle that ran,(which is hard to find with such little money) i ran across this 96 discovery.

It runs pretty good, however, when I went to pickup the vehicle (after already looking at it once before) I realized that the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. Since I did not have a ride, my dad drove me to pick it up from the private owner. We were looking at it and realized that the Brake Master Cylinder is leaking pretty bad. I was a little weary about buying it because it also has a oil leak from the Valve Cover. Then my dad says, "oh a new Master Cylinder shouldnt be that much to replace." And i know valve cover gaskets arent much. So what the hell? I bought it today and drove it home with no brakes.

I get home to look up prices on a new Master Cylinder and I cant find one for less that $200. Just my luck... I dont have any money left and I need to get on the road so I can find a new job.

I have not had a chance to check my local junkyards yet, but can anyone please give me some insight as to where I can find the best deals on parts. I hope I havent gotten myself in a bad situation, i just could not turn down the Rover that i have always wanted. Any suggestions? All help is much appreciated.

It must be from another DI, so a master cylinder from '93-'99 will work BUT the '99 MUST be from a DI NOT a DII.
The DII was introduced in '99.5.

Now just so you know, you MUST use premium gas in the Rover, no exceptions.

As for the valve covers, go buy a 8mm 12 point socket and tighten the bolts.
In order to replace the gaskets you need to remove the intake plenum.
And then the new gaskets will be leaking again in 6 months any way.
Just tighten the bolts.

thanks spike...but it looks exactly the same as the one i need. but ill trust u on this since i am completely new to the rover world. also, i did read about using premium gas in the rover and i asked the previous owner what had been using and he told me 89. so that is what i put in it today. is 89 good enough?
also thank you for telling me the tool that i needed to tighten the valve covers, i saw it and that was going to be my first option before replacing the gaskets so u have answered another question that i had.

As for buying used parts, in addition to eBay, check out your local Craigslist (and whichever others might be in reasonable driving distance). You may find (as I did locally) someone parting out the model you need.

There's a good "how to bleed your brakes" posting here as a sticky, I think, but the thing you should know is that after you reassemble and bleed, you need to go trigger your ABS and TC to blow extra air bubbles out of the modulator, and then re-bleed.

Opinions differ on whether you need a Rover-specific OBD computer to do that, or whether just mashing on the brakes, and running HDC down a hill is enough.

He has a DI, no traction control and most likely his ABS modulator is toast anyway and he needs to pull the fuse for it from under the hood.

89 octane will get you through in a pinch, but 91 or higher is required, it even says so in the owners manual.
There are many reasons why you need to use premium, like sludging up the engine and possibility blowing it up, but here is the one that will make you use it.
Your MPG will be less if you dont use it.
It will only cost you a few dollars more but your MPG will increase and you will actually go farther on the same amount of gas.
Now lets do the math.
87 octane is $2.50 per gal, @ 20 gal (thats when the low fuel light will come on, you have a 25 gal tank) will cost you $50.
89 octane will be $2.60 per gal, @ 20 gal thats $52.
93 octane is then $2.70 per gal, @ 20 gal thats $54.
Now this is using the "ten cent spread" that is common practice at 98% of all gas stations.
So switching to premium will cost you $2 more per 20 gal of gas than the mid grade that you put in.
You can expect 15 mpg as a daily driver, thats if you use a light foot and have a good tune up.

here regular is $2.50 (87) and premium (93) is $2.95...so more like 20% difference.
