Well.. I hope aftermath repair goes as well as mine did.. she fought me quite a bit. I beat her into submission. Finished it at 130am. No leaks.. no overheat. Still some cavitation sound in the dash.. Throttle body heater still leaks though. The rtv thing was an excellent idea. I didn't use it on the oil pan though. Figured that really nice pan gasket was good enough.

I have to agree about RTV on the oil pan gasket. I followed the RAVE to the letter and only used sealant where it said to. I did not use it when I did my 100K service and it is seeping oil very slowly. When I replace the oil pan gasket next time I am going for a little RTV. I think I may also use a little on the valve covers also.
I have replaced the front cover without RTV and never had a problem so I'll skip the RTV on that (just my opinion).

 

Hi Jared i'm a little confused. I think your saying the rave says not to use sealant ? from what I read in the rave manual on page 12-2-37 says to apply a 0.2" wide bead of sealant across the cylinder block to the rear main bearing joint. then apply a globule of sealant to cover the ends of the cruciform seals. i would like to know when someone brings a disco II in for repair at land rover dealer what they do when putting on a new oil pan gasket.

 

I'm sorry for the confusion. I used the sealant on only the places the RAVE said to. This time I am going to use a thin layer of sealant all the way around the whole gasket not just the 4 places it recommends to.

 

think i'm going to have to try that also, when the parts get here. Hope it's soon because it's just getting colder ever day.

 

i used sealant ony where it said to on the oil pan gasket..its a pretty good rubber unit.. so i kinda trust it. as for the front cover.. i used a thin layer of rtv there as well.. i dont want to take any chances.. and my LR tech said it was a good idea. so far.. no coolant leaks.. from that area anyway lol.

 

Finally got everything installed. I found that the fan clutch was bad and had to order and replace that also. There is know more coolant leak our air in the system. and I now have a bleeder value. I don't see a oil pan leak yet but I did have some help with installing it. Thanks you to all the members that helped me figure all this out.
