Need some guidance with splicing backup camera into rear bumper reverse lights
I've purchased a aftermarket Wolfbox rear view mirror/camera system for my 2004 D2. I'm working the mirror to the truck via the interior fuse box below the steering wheel. Going to use piggyback ads a fuse connectors. Anyways right now I'm a little stuck with regards to the rear bumper reverse lights. I need to splice in a red wire from the backup camera directly to one of the live reverse light wires. I'm not sure which wire to splice into. The backup camera has 2 wires wired to it. One is a black 20 foot power cable which is ment to be fed from the back all the way up front and connected to the mirror. The other wire is a thin red wire. The manual for the mirror says the red wire needs to be spliced into the reverse light life wire.
I would like to splice into one of the wires on the driver side reverse light. But I'm not sure which factory wire I need to splice into. Any knowledge of these wires would be greatly appreciated.
Did this a couple of weekends ago. Remove the right hand brake light assembly and you will find the trailer connection plug. Check the D2 electrical library for the colour of the wire you're looking for (I think it's green/brown) and tap into that wire behind the plug. I used a voltmeter to confirm that the pin of the trailer plug received 12v when the truck was in reverse and 0v in any other gear.
if you ran the camera wires up front already: reverse light 15amp wire from trans (which activates the back up lights) is located at driver footwell. Thick green w/brown stripe. This will activate the camera function. Grey connector. Look at the red wire spliced into the green w/brwn
As mentioned before the rear mounted camera comes with 2 wires. A black power cable which is long enough to feed up front and a short red wire to be spliced into the reverse light wire in the rear. Now it's worth mentioning that my headliner has been removed as has all the rear trim. All the wiring harness is exposed in the cargo area so I'm still looking for a safe shortcut where I can easily solder in the red wire in the rear.
You can pull out the reverse light on the rear bumper. There are 3 wires. I forget which one is which though. Should be pretty easy to figure out
Hi, I am currently doing the same installation as the OP. Question though, I do see the wires coming from the light on the rear bumper but my question is how do I "fish" the wire into the interior of the vehicle, where the other wire that goes to the camera is?
I just ordered a Wolfbox G850 and am planning the install. I was thinking I would replace the factory mirror, but now I'm not sure. Also, thinking about the rear camera location below the 3rd brake light on the interior. Where did you guys locate the rear camera?
The rear cam is pretty much useless if the lens is directly exposed to the rain (foggy and blurred). The best spot for me is to mount the camera on the license plate frame. The camera is also shielded underneath by the license plate bulb housing.

I mount mine top of the tail door looking down, I think I uploaded a photo once. I can do one tomorrow.
