There were only 4.0 engines in the 03's and 04 in Europe and other countries, so quit worrying about if you have an 4.6.
You are going to need to crawl under the t/case and verify if a shift cable is attached to the shift point in the attached picture.

The 4.0 and 4.6 are the same engine.
I would be more conserned with the CDL, which it sounds like it does not have.

I'd be happier if it had the 4.6L, which it does not seem to.

Will check from underneath the T-case for the shift cable as you suggested.

So, is the 4.6 just a bored out 4.0 ?

Another question, if it turns out to be really a 2004 model, with the 4.0L engine and does not have CDL, is it still worth buying (considering that i'm in the middle-east, lots of sand) at 10K$ ??

Any known issues with this engine (2004, 4.0L) ?

thanks much

Yes the 4.6 is a stroked 4.0.
You can turn a 4.0 into a 4.6 by replacing the guts (cank, rods, cam, etc.)

What are the known problems with the 4.0? Depends on which 4.0 you are talking about.
The GEMS 4.0 headgaskets.
The BOSCH 4.0 (and 4.6 since they are the exact same engine) headgaskets and cank sensor.

Just so we are clear, the only difference between the GEMS and BOSCH engines are the add on's, they are the EXACT same block and heads and guts.
It is the engine managment that is different as well as the cooling systems and emissions systems.

Need to add, read the "write ups" and "new members must read" sections on the top of the page.

It seems to have the later BOSCH system as its a 2004. I did go thru the "write ups" and "new members must read" sections in addition to searching and reading the forums for almost a week. That is how i learnt about the head gasket, front prop shaft, power window and various other issues. These helped me a lot while doing a visual inspection of the car.

The only thing now is to find out how much it will cost me to get a CDL instaleld if it doesnt have one. As i understand the '99-'01 models had the CDL in place, but the linkages removed and the '01-'03 models had the CDL completely removed. So, technically speaking this car, an '04 should have the CDL. Going with the worst case scenario that it doesn't have a CDL at all, what d oyou think would be an estimated value to install a CDL (again i assume i'll have to swap the T/case with one that has CDL) ??

thanks again guys

ALL DII's have the BOSCH engine.

If it truely is a '03 like it looks like it is then a whole new transfer case will be needed to get the CDL.
The other t-cases have the CDL guts just need the engageing mechanism, the '03's do not even have the guts.
I would pass on this one and keep looking.

My 2000 Discovery has 2 stickers under the hood right in front of the radiator that says the build date and the engine size. The higher level Discoverys came with 18 inch wheels, those are 16 inch (better for offroading).

Thx. Thats what i did, i passed on this one. Too many unknowns and not clear documents/answers from the owner. Unfortunately, the user car market for land rovers is not very good around here, though the re-sale values are low, there are not many cars to choose from (and i can't afford a new one ). So, i'm back into the search.

As i wrote above, not many used Landys around here, never seen a defender on the roads... and i can't afford the new ones.
