Went ahead and did the CDL linkage swap from a '96 D1 into the 2000 D2. Total parts cost: $18.44.
And yes, it's a pain in the ***. The plate needs to be cut significantly larger and extended back towards the shift selector. It also needs to be installed on top of the transmission hump metal, not underneath as originally installed. There also needs to be some McGyvering of the linkage (not just bending, but adapting the old system to the new). Finally, the old hi-lo selector cable is a bitch to get out. You can't reach the mid-point bracket with the tranny in the car, so Mr Cutoff Wheel and a pair of bolt cutters were employed to just cut both ends off.
The diff lock linkage itself was a 15 second attachment.
I should note, I used a CDL from a D1, which bolts to the top of the tranny. That's why I needed the major surgery on the backing plate. An Ashcroft type CDL (or one from a 2004 D2) uses a cable to actuate the diff lock and bolts to the underside of the backing plate, just like the original non CDL hi-lo shifter. That allows you to reinstall the backing plate in the original, under mount configuration. If memory serves me, the backing plate from a D1 has a ginormous hole cut in it from the factory, with an additional rubber boot to add some air and heat seal under the leather shift boot (which I grabbed too, see original post pics). I'll be working on figuring out how to trim that down In such a way as to use it under my leather boot. Will also keep dirt and other stuff out.
Where are you getting a new shift decal plate from?
I discovered that I had to add Loc-Tite to the splines of the high-low shift to keep the new piece from working its way off the end and leaving me stranded until I could tear out the centre console. The bends in the arm are pretty critical.

Land Rover 99~04 Discovery Transfer Case Center Differential CDL Decal Sticker
When I installed an '04 T-case shifter in my '99 I got a sticker from Rovers North that shows the correct operation for locking the CDL. The item description says it's for the Defender but it's the correct size and the image is correct. The only difference between it and the sticker in an '04 Discovery is that it doesn't have the "domed" plastic surface.
I've seen dozens of threads here asking about getting the exact sticker that was used in the '04 but no one ever posted a source. The Defender sticker is just fine.
My concern, outside of the sticker, is the fragile center console and the plastic tabs that hold the control panel for the windows and heated seats. Anyone come up with a way to replace the plastic tabs?

Someone's gonna ask, so it might as well be me: have you confirmed that the '01 has a CDL in the transfer case?
