New to the disco
I currently have a Toyota 4Runner which just threw a rod and hence needs a new engine at only 122k miles. I am considering getting a Disco but am new to them and would like to get some advice. First off, has anyone owned both a 2nd Generation 4Runner and an older model (96-00?) disco and have opinions on the comparison?
Also, if I am looking at one of the older models, are there any years/options that I should be looking for and/or avoiding and why?
This would primarily be a daily driver that would see some off road use when camping and exploring. Reliablitly and cost of maintenance is a bigger concern than ultimate off road performance for me.
Any thoughts and suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Unfortunately, The cost of maintenance for Discos is quite large, Land Rovers in general are very high maintenance vehicles. I have a 98 dI and i love it, But the pockets dont... That and gas mileage, And the thirst for Premium that MUST be quinched will all hurt you. Il let some more expierenced guys answer but im sure they will agree.
All in all its worth it to me.

I use to own a '95 4runner limited and currently own a '99 DII. The rover probably gets a little better gas mileage on the highway but requires premium. I don't think I ever got over 17mpg with the 4runner. The 4runner probably gets a little better mileage in the city. They both ride good for a SUV but the rover has a more solid feel to it. I didn't take the 4runner off-road much..everytime I did I would hear a popping noise from the left front..probably just a ball joint but I just never did trust IFS for any serious off-road action.

Read through that, it should help answer some questions.

you cannot just ignore maintenance on the LR like you can with the toyota.
i had a tacoma. loved it. but love the Rover, too.
if you like messing with you car, Rover is great. if you don't want to mess with your car, pick another vehicle.
