That is a tough one. The t-case's are known to develop leaks and if the leak went unchecked she could have ran it dry, if it did not sieze then it would move somewhat before it started to lurch and protest to the point to where a normal person would stop driving it.
Or it could just be low on tranny fluid.
However if we take this mechanics word that the t-case is toast...can you get the mechanics number and talk to him yourself?
Get the info from the horses...mouth?

I just received an email on the '99 with the potential trans problem...

"We were told today it may just be the rod that hold the transmission which would be much less expensive to fix. Regardless, it will need a tow."

They are going to email pictures tomorrow. Shall I add this one back onto the list?

What rod? Can they be more specific?
Include the pics of that one when you get them and try and find out what rod they are talking about.

So regarding the '96 with the transfer case needed issue... My fear is that it was the transmission not the transfer case... so...

I found a used transmission and transfer case from a '97 Discovery with under 80,000 rounds (worked fine when removed) for $300 from our local parts recycler- I have a friend there and she can guarantee it works or she will get me another one that does.

Can I just remove the old ones and bolt in the new ones? Is is that simple? I have the shop, tools, labor, etc. I just don't want to take it on if it is going to be way more complicated than that...
