Trying to put on the tom woods, but can't get the bolts off the back, and the shaft won't spin to be able to reach some of them.

Put the trans in neutral.
Release the parking brake and chock the wheels.

I am assuming that you have the wheels off the ground, or at the very least the passenger side wheels, both front and back.
Unless you added the CDL shifter you dont have it as you have a 2001 which did not come from the factory with a CDL.

Thats your problem, the wheels must be hanging free with no resistance.
Put the front axle on jack stands and you can spin the front driveshaft with one finger.

wow, I am a moron. I don't have a large jack, so I will have to continue to work on it. If I roll the truck back the shaft will move though, right?

Yes if you move the truck both drive shafts will move, only need to move the truck fractions of a inch at a time.
This is the same thing that I have to do when I grease my u-joints as all the grease fittings are not on the same side of the drive shafts.
Grease the front ones, move the truck a inch, grease the back drive shaft.
