Default New engine....

Well, I finally had the dreaded cylinder sleeve slip. After battling the t-stat, head gaskets and water pumps for three years and 40k miles, the poor gal decided to throw in the towel. Soooo now I need a new engine and I'm having trouble finding which year of engine I can get away with. The local yard has a 99 with only 68k on it for 1900$ and I'm ready to buy and drive (already have the old one out.) but I dont want to buy until I'm sure it will fit in my 01 disco2. Any tips or tricks would be appreciated.

Is the 99 from a Disco I or II? As long as it is from a Disco II, it will be plug and play with the only possible problem being the oil pressure switch. LR changed designs sometime in 1999. The engine I put in my 2000 was from a 1999. Everything worked perfectly except for the oil switch wiring. Then it was a simple switch replacement. Just make sure you get SAI or non SAI depending on your vehicle.

It came out of a disco 2 so I'm hoping it will work out. thanks for the tip on the oil switch, wouldnt have guessed that. If and when I need that switch, where do you recommend I get it? can I take the old switch off the 01 and put it into the 99?

That's what I did- they were the same thread pitch so I just pulled the switch from my old engine. Everything else matched up perfectly, and thought I was in the homestretch until I reached below the right side of the engine to connect that harness...

Atlantic British makes an adapter that goes from old wiring harness to new style switch, but not the other way around. http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/STC4603G.cfm

1 more major question (probably stupid but I'll ask anyway). I have the SAI, If the engine I'm getting does not, can I break the new one down to a short block and build it up from my old parts? or is there something different in the core that makes it SAI compatable

Only the heads are different AFAIK.
Just a legality to keep in mind is that you are supposed to use an engine from the same model year or newer when swapping out. No one checks it so who cares, right?

Default fix it...

thanks for all the input. definitely gives me some stuff to think about, although fixing it seems to be a good option, just have to find a shop willing to do it, called around to two in my area and they laughed at me...

The SAI is a add on after the fact emissions device.
The only thing that will no/not know it is there is the ECU.
It may throw a code if you do not include the SAI.
