Default New Guy...Praise, probs, and ?'s 03 Disco II

Hey guys,
I love the forum...been reading for the last few minutes and already got a lot of answers. I own an old CJ-7 that I am always fiddling with and because of that I belong to Jeepforum.com. Well, lately I have been having some trouble with my Disco and it hit me that I better join a Disco forum. This seems like the one to be at!

I have an 03' Disco II that I bought in 06'. It was a one owner vehicle (soccer mom type) had 32,000 on it and a year of warranty. Today it has 55,000 on it.

Here's the run down:...Please excuse the length but I need some guidance!

1. Brakes sqeak from time to time but not bad...the Three Amigos (just learned about the nickname...think it's pretty damn funny...it does refer to the ABS, Down Hill DC, Traction control lights...correct?)

2. Every once in a while the service engine light comes on but it is rare.

3. Acouple of months ago I put her in gear and when I hit the gas peddle the Disco moved but it felt strange. I happened to glance at the dash board and the green sport mode light as weel as another grren light, both surrounded by little gear like icons were blinking. The directions in my manual said to turn the disco off than on again and if the lights went away...you're cool. I did that and they went off. About two weeks after that I was driving to work and she just shut down while I was doing about 35mph. I wrangled her into a parking lot and noticed those lights were blinking again. I turned the key off but the disco would not start again.
I had it towed to a shop. The shop told me the crank signal sensor was getting too hot and shutting the disco down. Is this common?

4. About this time I had also been expieriencing a lot of front-end vibration. My tires were pretty bad off and I thought they may be the problem. Turns out some front-end steering and suspension was loose. I think it was a tie rod...but right before it was fixed it was vibrating really bad. I had visually inspected the front and shook on everything...nothing seemed loose but I guess it was because after the adjusted it...no more shaking. Is that common in Disco II's?

To wrap it all up the crank sensor and front-end adjustment cost me $550 and I have not had a problem since. However I am still getting the blinking green "m" and blinking green "s" lights at least 3-5 times a week. I put it in gear...they start blinking...I shut the disco off...turn it back on and they go away. However when they come on, the disco will still drive it just feels wierd. Anybody know what is goin on here?

Thanks so much guys--Collard green

Check your front drivehaft and read up on some of the other driveshaft posts. The rest I know nothing about... sorry

I have had the blinking m and s before. In my case it turned out to be low voltage that puts your transmission in limp mode. Check your battery it is probably time for a new one.

So my front drive shaft could be giving me the blinking grean m and s?

Does everybody agree that the front drave shaft greasable u-joint swap is a must?

I just got a new battery 6-8 months ago. Anymore advice...Thanks--CG

No the front driveshaft will not cause the flashing "M" (manual mode) and "S" (sport mode) lights, low battery voltage will.
You either need anew battery or alternator.
You just got a new battery...

Well I will put it to you this way about the front driveshaft, do you have $7,000 burning a hole in your pocket?
You will be writing a check for a new transmission if your driveshaft fails, end of story.
You can take the truck to a shop and have the front driveshaft rebuilt with greasable u-joints and then make sure that they get greased at every oil change.
Tornado has pics of what will happen if you dont have the front driveshaft rebuilt.

I would still check your battery even if it is only 8 months ago. If you bought a cheap battery it could be bad already. I bought a battery from walmart about 2 years ago that has a 5 year warranty on it. I live in the desert and have already destroyed 3 of them. So you might as well check it because if it is bad you can get a replacement for free.

I have the same problem on my 04 Disco with the blinking "M" and "S" (I presume that's what you're talking about). Did some research and found out it is caused by your SWITCH GEAR POSITION XYZ (yes, that's what it is called) getting wet, probably due to the A/C Duct leaking on to it. As soon as I get the money will be replacing that and finding ways to ensure that it never gets condensation or any other sort of wetness on it. I'm open to any ideas.

Thanks for the advice everybody... I will definitley be checking my battery when I get home...However I tend to think it is more than that because when these m and s lights come on the disco dives funny... I guess a better description would be that it feels like the disco is slow to start moving compared to the throttle I give it. Thanks agian--CG

That will also happen if you have a low voltage issue, you will drop into Limp Mode and shouldn't be driving it as your owners manual states.

When the "M" and "S" starts flashing your truck will become stuck in 3rd gear, making the car sluggish and causing it to feel like its in "limp" mode. You will notice a dramatic decrease in power, and your truck will not shift.
