Just replace the alternator.
Get a new Denso.

Make sure the ground strap from the driver's side head to the firewall is there.
It is a braided wire.
Did you put that wire back on?

@jfall - I have three kids in private school and one on her way to Syracuse next year. If I put a new alternator in then one of them has to go without food ; )

I did, however, put that wire back and it is secure. I have good, clean connections at the battery and firewall. Hopefully I will learn more when I get home tonight. I'll see what my wife found out at AutoZone.

I don't t think $140 will sink kid #3's education in private school.

Here you go:

New Land Rover Discovery II Alternator 4 4 6 130A 99 04 | eBay

@jfall, I don't know, man. I run on a pretty slim margin ; ) and GO ORANGE! is right.

So, those saying alternator were spot on. Ordering tonight.

I got the codes from AutoZone: P0300, P0304, P0306, P1300, P1500, P1514, P1551, P1590 - they didn't charge me to read the codes but they thought about charging printing costs...

I think the P03** are misfires. I just put new plugs and wires on 2 months ago. So I wonder if those are older stored codes. The other codes I don't know - I mean I looked them up, but I don't know what they mean.

Thanks,
Erik

Did you reconnect the idle air control valve?

How many volts is the alternator generating?

Most of those codes are misfires, the 1590 is abs, but the 1514 and 1551 are iacv codes. If the truck isn't misfiring, I'd zero in on the iacv.

Google the cell phone app 'torque'. It's cheap, and you'll need a $20 bluetooth obdii reader, but it allows you to pull and reset codes as well as monitor raw data from the ecu (like colant temp and volts). Probly the best $25 I've ever spent on a tool.

@ Dr Mordo - good catch on the IACV - it was attached but the clip had not engaged so no good contact. Pushed it on firmly first thing this morning - and it fired right up with good rpms. The truck is not misfiring. I wrote down the numbers for the battery and alternator but I'm at the office and don't have them with me. They were not good - I tested first with nothing on and then turned on lights, blower, and rear defrost.

I actually have Torque on my phone and the blue tooth - I was using it with my Audi TT (may she rest in peace). I never thought to use it on the Rover. Good call!

Thanks,
Erik

Ok - new alternator on and still getting the rough idle. Back to AutoZone (haven't been able to find my OBD blue tooth reader someplace in the garage though). Still getting P0304, P0306, and P0300 - and a code which didn't print out but the guy read it as something to do with the torque converter.

Also the CEL has started flashing - actually alternating between solid and flashing. I know flashing isn't good. Also, a faint rattle - yipes, not a cat, right?!?! I pulled the plugs - some good and 4&6 very sooty which I guessed would be the case since it smells like it is running rich.

Any thoughts?
