Default New to Land Rovers, some questions inside

I'm currently deployed right now, and will be returning in 5 months. I'm beginning to look at a family car, and my fiance showed interest in the Land Rover Discovery. I love the way it looks, but the car guys over here say they're junk. I just wanted to know what I should look at if I'm buying a used Discovery. I've been a VW guy since I was young, owning Corrados, GTI's, Golfs, and now its time for me to upgrade a bit. How reliable are they? I'm looking to spend around 12,000 or less. Is it possible to find a nice one in that price range with less than 100,000 miles? I like the 02's and newer. Once I buy one, It wont be driven very far. I'm stationed at Ft. Bragg in North Carolina and I don't live but 10 miles from post. Thank-You in advance!

Yes you can find them in that price range.

There not junk just require more maintenance than other vehicles.

You want your rifle to work so you care for it and oil it and love it and give it all the attention it needs and it works each and every time you pull the trigger, drop it in the sand...it works, water...it works, snow...it works, why? Because you care for it the way it needs to be cared for.
A Land Rover is the exact same way.

Do most owners have knowlege of the problems? It seems that most of the problems can be solved by doing proper preventative maintenance. I'm still iffy on it, but i think i'm going to end up buying one. I'm a diesel mechanic in the army, I can do most of the work myself. Any suggestions for a first time buyer?

Non of the Rovers you are looking at have HID's.
HID kits are illegal.

Yes 90% of the problems can be prevented.
My Rover is the second most reliable car I have ever owned and I have owned 2 brand new cars before.
The most reliable was a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero (NOT the Sport), 100,000 miles in 5 years and was in the shop once and that was for a free oil change.

I bought my truck with 152k, she now has 193k and the biggest thing I have done so far is replace all four wheel bearings.

Do NOT even look at the '03's, bottom line do not even consider them, '02 or '04.
