New member about to buy 2000 Discovery
Hello Folks,
Just registered here. I don't have Land Rover yet. I never liked SUVs, but LR was always exception. I am thinking to buy 1999-2000 Discovery with tax money, which I like more than newer models and what I see on ebay looks affordable to me. I need it for utilitarian, rather than everyday use, primarily for hunting, hauling etc. From what I read so far, it appears SLS is the common weak point of this year Disco. How difficult is to convert to coil suspension? Would it be possible for someone with average mech. skills? (I have replaced wheel bearings, brakes, starter on my 83 diesel Benz). can you suggest link(s) to how to do conversion? Thanks a bunch!

If you're looking for something to be more utilitarian you should look into the Discovery Is. They were made in the states from 94 to mid 99. There's way less to go wrong on a DI than a DII. Don't worry about the increased mileage, worry about finding a truck that's well taken care of. Properly maintained, a Disco (I or II) will last 300k+ miles.
But if you do have your mind set on the years you mentioned, the SLS is a piece of cake to swap for coils, there are a few kits available online cheaply. Just so you know all Discovery's require premium gas, the DIIs need to have the front driveshaft rebuilt with greasable U joints and a new centering ball.

I do not believe that Self Leveling Suspension (SLS) is "standard equipment" on the Discovery II, unless you get the 7 passenger (SD7, SE7) model. Just look for a 5 passenger without the SLS as an option. However, I don't think that the conversion would be difficult. If you do get a disco, get yourself the RAVE CD (Shop Manual), your gonna need it.
Thank you for the such a fast reply!
I did not look at older Discos, probably I should. I am watching two Discos on ebay right now. I am ebay nut, both my current cars came from ebay and I sold lot of stuff there.
This orange one is actually listed locally, by used car dealer. I am going to see it tomorrow. The seller says that is was doctor's car maintained by LR dealer with all records etc. I actually like the funky orange color; but probably it is too much truck for what i want it for.

This one is in Florida and kinda dicey. carfax reports theft on this one. Hence the pannels and some other interior stuff missing. Also air suspension does not work, because of seized compressor, according to the seller. I'd rather go after the second one, for the sake of $$. The truck looks to be sagging, perhaps because of the suspension?

Dont mess with the second one you listed. Way to much strange stuff wrong with it, and usually that means it hasn't been taken care of, which means big problems for you down the road. The first one seems MUCH better. Go look at it yourself and maybe bring it by a shop to have it looked over. If you notice anything funky come ask us about it and we'll try to point you in the right direction. The better taken care of the better, thats obvious for all cars but expecially for a rover!
I'd buy the second one because it's cheap, has low miles and cosmetic issues can be fixed whenever. IMHO, as long as the engine and tranny are good, the other stuff can wait. Unfortunately, that's too far for me to go get.

The first one in PA (crimson red) is an SD model, first five characters in the VIN should read: SALTLxxxxxx. The price is already too high for an item with 4 days left. It will probably end up in the high six / low seven....Too much.
I think that the one in FL will not fetch much on EBAY. It will probably hit 2800 - 3500. Also, it is a VIN : SALTY with the rear air suspension which means that it has 7 seats.
Personally, I would buy the one in FL, spend 300 on the rear springs kit and another 100 on the center console inlay. You could probably get this one into a great shape for less than 1500.
In addition, SALTY (SE7) are worth much more than the SALTL (SD).
