I would probably skip spending serious money on that block. I would either do a 4.0 with the internals swapped with 4.6 bits or a P38 Range Rover 4.6 build.
It was supposed to be a Range Rover but there was to many issues with it in the end. So we shook hands and didn't do the deal

CollieRover, it is completely opposite here. My wife would have a barn full of these things, if she could. She even mentioned this yesterday on the way home with "Lilly". I was willing to walk after stalled negotiations with owner, and it was really to nice for what I was looking for (new trail rig build). But, my wife persuaded me to purchase it anyway.
Looks like l need to start building a barn...lol.
And it looks like we will be doing exactly what you dream of, her daily driver 04, my overland 03 and Frankenstein the 01 for a serious off-road machine.
Brian.
Definitely a barn and lift need to be in your future! You lucky bastard.
Yeah, it's not bad at the moment...but when the cars come home from winter storage...things will get a bit more difficult(er).
Between the three rovers, two cars, truck, horse and car trailer...l don't need a yard...l need a parking lot. Plus, we're kind of in the process of looking for a small travel trailer to pull with one of the rovers. Almost forgot...we store our sister in laws utility trailer...too. Yep, time to call a paving company and break out the yellow paint...lol.
Nice score! I’m kind of at a place where I wouldn’t mind finding one like this.
I’ll throw my unasked for advice in: Depending on what acquisition cost was, I’d spend the $$$ and get a crate engine. My reasoning is, if the body and interior are as sorted as you say, since you are savvy to all the known issues, and as we all know, they aren’t expensive or difficult to sort out, you can mitigate all that before it becomes the downward spiral of constant fixes. Things like adding an external temp gauge, changing the front drive shaft, going to a 180F t stat, no dexcool, etc.
That way, you’d essentially have a brand new machine for probably a good bit under $10k. Kinda makes me jealous if I’m honest...
Yes, all options are on the table. And a brand new engine isn't out of the question, LS or factory. Time is in my favor here, plenty to consider and it's not like we're rover-less without it in the mix.
