Default new owner - '97 Disco LE - having many problems

Hi!

I have just recently purchased a '97 Land Rover Discovery and I absolutely love my new car. It has 161,000+ miles on it and the check engine light is on (I intend on getting the codes tomorrow). I'm having a few performance issues and have been scouring the web all day for answers which has brought me here...

I've spent most of today reading through about 40 pages of forum topics to see if I could possibly repair the problems I am having without posting, but unfortunately I didn't find answers to a few of the more pressing problems, although many questions were answered...

ok here goes:

1. While driving, sometimes it likes to completely lose all power to everything, but only for a second, then it all comes back on... seems to only happen while running the A/C though

2. Someone rewired the headlights to run off one fuse and this somehow caused them to be a huge drain on the electrical system... meaning you can only use them for a short period of time before they start to kill the car

3. The windshield wipers don't seem to be powerful enough to to move across the windshield unless they are on the highest setting

4. When sitting at idle, if you turn on the A/C it draws a LOT of power from the engine and causes it to stall or almost stall then recover with a wobbly RPM for a few seconds

5. The power door locks sometimes don't function from the remote or using the key in the driver door

6. It takes a LOT of revolutions from the starter to get the engine to turn over

I thank you in advance

When you are getting your codes read, have them test your battery and alternator. Sounds like you aren't getting the right voltage to everything. YOu have too many amps going through something, it is heating up, failing, cooling down and then it is ok. I wouldn't run your a/c too much till you find out what is sucking your juice out...Something is drawing way too much power

Check your belt, belt tensioner, alternator and ac compressor for cracks in the brackets or loose mounting bolts. Replace worn belt, and or brackets , bolts If necessary. Get your disco to an electrical specialist before you have a fire! Check all your vacuum hoses for leaks and cracks for the rough idleing.

After you get the codes read, make sure to write them all down, give me a call and I will be glad to go thru them with you.

went to autozone

alternator is only pushing 12.7 to the battery so I'm thinkin either bad alt or bad wires

codes:

P0138 - Oxygen Sensor High Voltage
P1138 - Oxygen Sensor Engine Rich
P1317 - ABS Rough Road Line Low Fault
P0300 - Misfire On Multiple Cylinder
P0304 - Misfire Cylinder 4
P1316 - Misfire Excessive Emissions Fault

time for new plugs, sensors, and wires?

I would get your voltage problem lined out first. Always sucks to get something that someone else has "modified". If you want to change plugs and wires, here's a link... http://lrrforums.com/store/index.php...oduct_id=29892

Looks like they just raised the price, but Magnacor wires are the way to go.

cleaned and tightened the battery terminals and had them retest the alternator, its read 13.3 now so thats worked out... but it revealed a new problem...

now sometimes when I go to lock the car it starts clicking nonstop until I turn the key in the ignition. then the car doesn't start at all and none of the ACC lights turn on with the key until I shake the battery then the alarm goes off

someone on here just had the same problem, with that kind of noise. You may have a loose plate in the battery causing differing voltages. Would explain a lot. I assume your battery tested ok..... I would replace it.

well, muffler fell off today and the engine actually seems to be running smoother... haven't had many problems with the electrical system since I cleaned the batt terminals (still thinking about replacing all the major wiring [ignition, plug wires, starter, alt, etc] and the batt though), and I think its time to replace all the hoses as well as they seem old and cracked... one of the heater hoses sprung a leak the other day so I replaced both of them. I think its just time to replace all the hoses and c clamps.

still having the same problem every now and then with the clicking though, working on that...

Try to listen to all of the door separately. A failing actuator can do this
