Yeah, not sure what the heck is causing this. It's a brand new pump, not rebuilt. OEM. Installed and bled by the book. Overall it's quiet-ish, but if I'm listening for it, I can definitely hear a whine coming from it. Normal? Do these take time to break in or something?

What steering fluid did you use? That can really affect the sound from the pump.

make sure it's the pump. I had a bad idler bearing that sounded just like a whiny transmission.

if it's the pump, what brand did you use....? it may have a bad bearing too (or roller/vane/gear/whatever..) ....or as above....

It’s definitely the pump :/ it’s getting louder and worse. I bled it again today to see if that might help. No effect.

It came in a Eurospare box.

Could be a bad front bearing, take the belt off and see if you can wiggle the pulley

I think it's a crap shoot on so many of these suppliers (and their suppliers)..I have had good eurospare parts, and not so good.

so for example, I like the machining and plating on this ebay pump (maybe an indicator of a manufacturer that takes that extra little step in quality?)....but maybe that's not the one i get in the box.........

I’m so tired of getting DOA parts. Thermostats, wheel hubs, ABS sensor wires, now this. Doesn’t matter if it’s OEM, LR, OE, happens regardless.

Well I feel like a real idiot. I think I found the problem but won't know for sure until I test it out tomorrow. I ran across this thread (https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...p-28201/page2/) that alerted me to the fact that there's an o-ring that should be installed on the high-pressure line. There wasn't an o-ring on hose when I removed the old pump, and the old pump didn't have an o-ring lodged in it either, so I didn't know an o-ring should even exist, let alone be replaced. I happen to have a spare, new high-pressure hose waiting to be installed on the 2004. Sure enough, just checked: o-ring. I'm going to steal that one tomorrow and install it on the 2002 and am fully expecting this to be the solution to my problem here.

I hope that’s a good pump.

Stay away from an eBay seller called “Powersourcepartsllc” out of Jacksonville, FL. They promise a lifetime warranty but are full of ****. I had their pump installed at a Land Rover garage back in 2018 and after 3 months it groaned something terrible. Tried to get them to honor their warranty and ship me another pump but no such luck. They came up with all kind of excuses even though I emailed them the receipt of having it installed at a reputable LR garage.
Lessen learned…
